Het Fang-volk, ook bekend als Fãn of Pahouin, is een Centraal-Afrikaanse etnische groep die voorkomt in Equatoriaal-Guinea, in het noorden van Gabon en in het zuiden van Kameroen. Het Fang-volk vertegenwoordigt het merendeel van de bevolking van Equatoriaal-Guinea, geconcentreerd in de regio Río Muni, en vormt de grootste etnische groep. De Fang is ook de grootste etnische groep in Gabon en maakt ongeveer een kwart van de bevolking uit. In andere landen, in de regio's waar ze wonen, behoren ze tot de belangrijkste en meest invloedrijke etnische groepen. De Fang-mensen zijn relatief recente migranten naar Equatoriaal-Guinea, en velen van hen zijn in de 19e eeuw vanuit centraal Kameroen verhuisd. Het Fang-volk was het slachtoffer van de grote transatlantische en trans-Sahara-slavenhandel tussen de 16e en 19e eeuw. Ze werden door slavenhandelaren en missionarissen stereotiep als kannibalen, deels omdat menselijke schedels en botten werden gevonden in open of in houten kisten in de buurt van hun dorpen, een claim die werd gebruikt om geweld tegen hen en ook slavernij te rechtvaardigen. De kunstwerken van Fang-mensen, met name van hout, ijzer en speksteen, zijn regionaal beroemd. Hun houten maskers en afgodsbeelden zijn te zien in tal van musea over de hele wereld. Fang-kunstwerken waren de inspiratiebron voor veel van de Europese avant-garde kunstwerken die in de 20e eeuw zijn gemaakt.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.
