Amsterdam wordt steeds korter en spaarzamer bezocht; de winter wordt doorgebracht in het gehucht Missen in Zuid-Duitsland vlak bij de Boden-see, de zomermaanden op het Spaanse eiland Menorca. Het zijn de jaren van de grote interna-tionale erkenning, het regent prijzen: onder meer de Europese poëzieprijs in Italië en in eigen land de langverwach-te P.C. Hooftprijs. Allerzielen, de grote roman over Berlijn na de Wende, ver-schijnt, maar zonder het nog met zeker-heid te weten neemt de schrijver stilaan afscheid van de roman; de dichterlijke bron vloeit daarentegen des te sterker. Ook op persoonlijk vlak gebeurt er veel; de liefde is woelig en het afscheid van dierbare vrienden – Peter Schat, Joop van Tijn, W.L. Brugsma, Lodewijk de Boer en Philip Mechanicus – brengt de herfst van het leven steeds naderbij.
