About This Piece
An antique English silver plate tray or service plate by Elkington & Co, Birmingham, 1853. Scroll and foliate borders with armorial crests — a lion rampant holding a cross engraved to the rim in two places. Impressive detail throughout. Versatile in use: from serving drinks to holding mail on a hall table, the quality of the piece stands out.
Elkington & Co held royal warrants of appointment from Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King Edward VIII, and King George VI. Among their most celebrated works is the electrotype copy of the Jerningham Wine Cooler (original 1736–1737, solid silver) now at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
