Story

When I arrived in Tofino in September 1980, I had just finished two years of commercial fishing with very little in the way of earnings and could not help but think of my artwork. My passion had been put on hold, waiting for me to raise some capital to invest in my career as an artist. 

I thought of the long hours as a commercial fisherman and of applying that work ethic to my artwork, so I settled in Tofino for the winter. It wasn’t long before I realized this was an excellent place to be an artist. I began to make friends with the community's business people, and among them was a couple who owned Pacific Sands Resort. Mr. and Mrs. Pettinger took me under their wing and encouraged me to build an art gallery in Tofino. As time went by, they helped me look at the business of running my gallery. They pushed me into an area totally out of my comfort zone, and I began to learn. It wasn't long before Eagle Aerie Gallery was born, and the community's support made it an instant success. 

I live far from Tofino these days and return many times through the year to be present in the gallery as a storyteller. Part of my story is always about the people of Tofino and the support and encouragement they gave me to grow as an artist and businessman. 

When I walk the beaches and see the sunset at places like Sunset Point, my memory goes back to those days of new adventures and a new career as an artist. I am grateful to the Pettinger family and all their friends who helped me to become who I am today.
