The dry conditions led to early flowering and despite the dry, crop levels were quite reasonable for the first time in many years. The vines struggled against the dry conditions and ripened the crop quickly leading to the earliest and fastest harvest in our memory. The wine quality is exceptional across all varietals and with similar vintage conditions not seen since 1967, this may well be one of the great vintages of modern times.
VINEYARD & WINEMAKING NOTES
Longview is an Australian pioneer with Grüner Veltliner, a variety that captured our interest as one of the world’s most versatile wines. We have three different Austrian clones planted in 2010 on a cool and breezy single south facing slope. Harvested as spice and flavour develops and capturing natural acidity. Crushed and gently pressed to manage phenolics whilst capturing pepper spice from the skins. Cloudy juice is fermented cool in stainless steel to maintain aromatics and build texture and palate richness. Fermented to dryness and bottled immediately to preserve freshness. In 2022 Longview won the Francois De Castella trophy, a first for Gruner Veltliner.
