Genuine Usak rugs were woven in this region for both Domestic use and Commercial sale, with the Commercial Rugs demonstrating more intricate designs and finer quality materials and workmanship than the Domestic Rugs.
This is a typical example of a Quality Rug woven for the Commercial market. This Usak Carpet Rug is woven with delicate and sparsely placed Floral Motifs in Rust Red, Brown and Gold on a Beige / Cream background. It has high sheen and low pile due to the special knotting and shaving techniques used.
This design is based on the original 16th Century designs woven during the 18th and early 19th Centuries for use in Cathedrals, Churches and the homes of the wealthy and powerful. More recent contemporary productions replicate these designs of the Ottoman Era and are characterized by subtle, stylised floral motifs, typically featuring soft apricot and golden saffron, on a single color, shaded, patina-like background. These rugs are typically woven with high quality sheep/lamb wool on a cotton base which allows for thesde extremely tightly-woven, delicate designs to be achieved. Special pile shaving techniques are employed to produce the effect of lighter or darker appearance depending on orientation of the rug to the light.
