Olga Corydoras Simulatus Catfish

South America: Upper Meta River in Colombia.

Sexing

When properly conditioned, the difference between the male and female Corydoras is usually quite evident. Females will look a lot wider when viewed from the top, as they have a larger underbelly. Males are also shorter in length than females.

Tank compatibility

Very peaceful community fish. Will not intentionally bother tank inhabitants, however their bumbling about the tank may bother more delicate fish or other bottom dwellers. Are best kept in groups of 5-6 or more.

Diet

As with most Corydoras, these fish will eat most food which sinks to the bottom of the tank. Sinking algae pellets should be supplemented with flake food or other sinking foods like catfish pellets.

Be aware these fish do have a carnivorous side to them and love foods such as Bloodworm and Brine Shrimp. Vegetable-based foods offer little nutrition to them. They will also eat any dead, dying, or even injured fish, that sit on the substrate too long. They're very opportunistic!

Feeding regime

These fish are most active at night, so feeding once before lights out is typically enough. Though they can easily be persuaded to feed during the day. Since they are slower eaters they should be allowed at least 30 minutes to consume their food.

Environment specifics

Requires a sand or small gravel substrate and prefers a planted tank. Keeping a cory on sharp or large gravel can lead to damage to their barbels, which when infected will make it hard for the cory to find food.

Corys are sensitive to salt, as with other scaleless fish, adding salt to the tank will cause them harm.

Behaviour
  • The Corydoras group of fish frequently gulps air. This is normal and is not a cause for concern. If too little room is available between the water surface and the hood (<2") the fish may hit the hood. They hold the air in their stomach and the thin lining dissipates the oxygen.
  • This fish likes the company of its own kind. It is recommended to keep at least 2, or better yet, several of the same species. The more you have, the more secure they are and the more you will see them.
  • They are known to 'blink' their eyes to the amazement of onlookers. The Cory has the ability to tilt its eye down to examine the nearby substrate.
Identification

Typical Corydora in shape. This species is one of only four which posses a third pair of rictal barbels, these are only small and can only be seen when the larger outer barbels are in a forward position.

Their body is cream/bronze in colour with a dark band along the spine from the dorsal fin to the caudal fin and down into the caudal peduncle. They also have a dark band vertically down over the eye.

Notes
  • These fish are incredibly docile, very peaceful and are a wonderfully easy fish to own. However it is a remarkably little known fact that Corydoras species have a very sharp barb just under each eye, one in the adipose fin, and a large one in the front of their dorsal fin.
  • The fish uses these barbs to protect itself from being swallowed by a larger fish. Therefore when using a net to catch these fish, be prepared for the Cory to become caught up in the mesh of the net. Also, ensure you don't try to catch this fish in your hand!
  • What is also little known is that most species of Corydoras have a poison gland in their barbs which causes fish which try to eat them to get stung. This causes the attacking fish to suffer a lot of pain rather like a jellyfish sting. Needless to say this causes an annoying, but harmless, irritant to aquarists skin if they get stung also.
  • The Cory has a sensitive sense of smell and its barbels allow it to taste food hidden in the substrate.
  • These fish are armoured, not scaled, catfish. They have two rows of overlapping bony plates running down each side and large plates covering their head. Indeed, the name Corydoras is derived from the Greek kory (helmet) and doras (skin).

Cool, lightweight, and surprisingly comfortable!
I absolutely love this cooling comforter! The first thing I noticed is how lightweight it is. It comes in at just over 3 pounds, so it’s not thick or bulky at all, which I really appreciate. It feels easy to move around and doesn’t weigh you down while you’re sleeping. I chose the queen size in dark gray. It’s reversible, which is such a nice bonus. One side has a simple white stripe pattern that gives it a little personality, and the other side is a solid gray. The solid gray side is the cooling side, and oh my goodness, it feels so silky and smooth to the touch. That cool-to-the-touch feeling is really noticeable when you first get under it. I didn’t have any issues with it sliding off the bed, but I’ll mention that I don’t toss and turn a lot at night, so that may be part of it. If you’re someone who moves around more, your experience might be a little different. As far as washing goes, I did notice a small inconsistency. The product description recommends hanging it to dry, but the tag on the comforter says it can be machine washed and dried. I’m going to go ahead and follow the tag instructions and tumble dry it. I’ll definitely come back and update if I notice any issues after machine drying it. I live in the South and right now our weather is actually pretty mild so it’s a little hard to say just how much of the cooling effect is from the blanket versus the temperature in the house. That said, I do feel like it’s helping. I haven’t been waking up hot and the fabric itself definitely feels cool and breathable so I’m excited to see how it performs when the real heat kicks in. I’m also really pleased with the overall quality. The stitching looks clean, there are no loose threads and everything feels well made and thoughtfully put together. It gives me confidence that it will hold up nicely over time. This doesn’t affect my rating, but I do wish there were more color or pattern options to choose from. It would be fun to have a few more styles, especially since it’s such a nice-looking comforter. 5 stars for its lightweight feel, silky cooling fabric, and solid, well-made construction.

This is a great blanket for those who prefer to be cool all night.
This is a great blanket for those who prefer to be slightly cooler all night. I have been using this for almost two months now. It's been difficult to figure out how to explain it's use. Ultimately I have figured out that it acts like a blanket, insulating and keeping you warm, however, wherever the blanket is actually resting on your skin stays cool. It took me a while to figure it out. How does an insulating blanket cool you? I'm not sure how the material actually works, but that is what it does, at least for slightly cool interior weather with a bit of humidity. I imagine in the desert it may work differently. I would say nights when a sheet may be too cold or thin, and a blanket way too hot, this is the in between. The material itself is soft and almost silky. It is made well, has a pleasant appearance on the bed, and doesn't wrinkle. So getting up in the morning it is easy to toss and make the bed. It breathes unlike a duvet cover and feather blanket, so no need to air it out so much. I have come to really love it and recommend it for anyone looking for an in between, between a sheet and comforter. I have never woken up sweating or pulling it off at night. My only experience was at first thinking I was cold but learning that I was not, only where my skin was in contact! For the quality and price, it is definitely worth giving it a try!

Attractive Comforter That Will Keep Hot Sleepers Cool
The Bedsmile striped cooling comforter ice blanket for hot sleepers is amazing. It's cool and comfortable thanks to its unique structure. If you're a hot sleeper, then this comforter is definitely the one for you. This comforter gives you the comfort of a blanket, but manages to also keep you cool throughout the night. It's soft and it feels cold to the touch on one side and smooth and comforting on the other. This is because one side is made from nylon which feels cool because it's a synthetic, thermally conductive material that quickly draw heat away from your skin. My daughter is the lucky recipient of this comforter, and she loves it. It matches perfectly with the gray sheets and pillowcases she already has. I have to admit I had my doubts when I first pulled it out of the package and saw it wasn't thick like a traditional comforter, but so far it has exceeded my expectations. The design is very attractive, gray with white stripes on one side, and a solid gray on the other. It is the solid gray side that is made of nylon for that cooling effect. It’s lightweight without feeling flimsy, and it is well-stitched. This is a quality comforter made with top of the line material. It's Queen size and its measurements are true. The ad says it is "reversible" but the solid gray side is nylon and that is where you get the cooling benefits...plus, it looks so much better with the gray and white strips on top. I'm really happy with this bedspread, it looks great, it is made with quality materials, it is soft and silky and it does keep you cool and comfortable at night. If you're looking for a good nights sleep, I highly recommend this comforter.
