LED Panel displays are a perfect target for your FPGA project using the iCEBreaker or another FPGA development board. Together with the PMOD LED Panel Driver it can connect your LED Panel to your FPGA or even a Raspberry Pi or microcontroller.

The panels can be chained together using ribbon cables going from one panel to the next. The maximum shift register clock rate of these panels is 30MHz so the longer the chain the longer it takes to refresh the screen.

We've collected some information about LED Panels in a Gist.

The specification of the panels is the following:

  • P2 -> 2mm pitch
  • 64x64 resolution
  • 1/32 scanning (means you need 5 address lines)
  • 128mm x 128mm overall panel size
  • HUB75E signal connector, this means it has one additional address line compared to the more common HUB75 connector
  • The panels come with one HUB75E ribbon cable and one power cable
  • You will need to provide 5V @ 4A peak to the display

You can get them in two variants, with the ICN2037 or FM6126 shift register. The ICN2037 shift register is very simple, does not require any configuration but it also has no built in color balance capabilities. The FM6126 requires an initialization sequence on power up to configure it correctly, before it can be used. This initialization sequence is implemented and documented in Bob Miller's icebreaker-candy FPGA designs. There is also a very exhaustive thread about the initialization sequence on the Henner Zeller RPi RGB LED Matrix project page. If you create designs that are FM6126 compatible let us know and we are happy to list them here.

The ICN2037 variant of the panels is compatible with the the Bob Miller's LED Cube project. They have the parts on the back of the panel in the correct positions to fit the led cube frame. If you buy different panels than the ICN2037 offered here you will likely have to either cut or modify the cube brackets.

Easy to use without any effort
Color: Orange
Needed a small space electric opener to help with opening cans due to arthritis. Manual ones were difficult to use. This fits in the palm of your hand and is easy to attach to can. It opens regular size cans easily, although it is a bit slow. The one can it didn't work well on was Fancy Feast Cat Food cans. Seems to leave a sliver of metal on the edge, very tiny but of concern. Contacted customer service and they were excellent - quick responses and very helpful at working with me to see if it was just the fancy feast can or the opener. Seems that those two just don't work well together. They even sent me a second opener so that we could try to recreate the problem. I am keeping the original opener and returning the second one as neither will open the Fancy Feast can. They supplied a return label also. There are lots of cans in the world and this is just a minor function situation with this opener. I think it is a great product.

A very handy kitchen tool.
Color: White
This can opener is an easy, hands free tool, to use. It does open canned items efficiently, but slower than hand-turn openers, which saves a painful wrist motion from which I suffer. Unlike a traditional opener, this one cuts under the can edge which requires caution when removing the lid as exposed cut edges are very sharp. Also, the opener does not stop when it has completed its circuit. The start button has to be pressed to stop action.

Update Year Later, Love it! Really impressed
Color: Orange
Update: I've owned it a year now, still on original batteries (surprised me), it still works great. I still get a little annoyed with how slow it it, but might be time for new batteries. Once in a blue moon the circle is not completely cut, but that's on me as I control when to stop it, to reverse. No issuese removing lid, very smooth. Love it. Original review: I'm pleasantly surprised. It does a great job! Very smooth, safe cut. Who knew? That said, it is much slower than a standard electric can opener, and you have no idea where it's cutting. Now I started on the first letter on the product's label, and pay attention to when the circle is complete. Press the "on" button a second time and it goes backwards for a few seconds. Done! Use the attached magnet to pull off the lid. I'm thinking of buying a second one. Also, I very much like that it uses standard batteries, nothing weird to look for. Well done!

Opener leaves wire threads on the rim of the can when opening. Poses a danger if ingested.
Color: Orange
Purchased this item hoping it would make opening cans easier (I have osteoarthritis in my hands). First time I tried it, after it rounded the lid of a can of DelMonte green beans, nothing. I reseated it, and held it down when it started. It opened the can after circling the top two times. When I took the lid off the can, there were tiny wire "threads" stuck on the can, and more stuck on the Kitchen Mama opener. I was able to very carefully wipe the wire threads off and pour the can of beans into my pan. HOWEVER, I will not use this product again. Who wants to run the risk of ingesting wire threads?!!! I would return the product for a refund, but my husband destroyed the box opening it, so this will go into the garbage. I wouldn't sell at a garage sale or donate it, because someone else might ingest the wire threads, and then Kitchen Mama would have a lawsuit on their hands I wouldn't have given ANY stars, but you have to give at least one to write a review.
