The clue was always in the name; since its creation in 1948, the Land Rover was designed to rove the land, regardless of conditions. As the world’s first successful civilian 4x4, it has defined a world it helped change, opening new horizons for adventure, work and humanitarian action on every continent. Iconic expeditions documented its early exploits spanning the globe and, for many, it was perhaps the first car they ever saw. A name that became synonymous with the Camel Trophy, the Defender even went rallying through the motorsport experts at Bowler. Worldwide sales included military versions, inspiring the Defender name that would later be applied to all variants, whilst many civilian models performed heroics too, serving as breakdown trucks, ambulances and hydraulic platforms. Whilst its capabilities took it to the most inaccessible locations, its appeal took it to the most glamourous places with some of cinema’s biggest stars; Marylin Monroe, Steve McQueen and Paul McCartney were among those who owned a Land Rover. The association wasn’t just with Hollywood royalty either, Queen Elizabeth II herself was often seen behind the wheel of a Defender on the Royal estates.

This was possible because, above all else, the Defender was engineered to be capable. With lightweight aluminium panels, very short overhangs and, crucially, selectable four-wheel drive, the Defender stormed the globe. 70 per cent of its Land Rover’s output had been exported to 150 countries within just ten years of production. Every version went further, setting standards others struggle to follow: new, longer wheelbases made the original more useable, engines grew more powerful and efficient, and modern comforts started to appear in Series 3 models onwards. The Defender name was introduced in 1990, following the introduction of the Land Rover Discovery the year previous. It perfectly reflected what customers all over the world felt about this unique vehicle: trusted, dependable, rugged and reliable. Production finally concluded in 2016, with over two million examples built during its 68-year production life, the longest-running production for a car in the world, with an estimated 75% of them still roaming the globe. No vehicle before it had left so many tyre tracks across the world, and none in the future is likely to match its legacy.

Amalgam Collection and Alan Thornton

Amalgam is delighted to partner with artist Alan Thornton to introduce a collection of Half Tone Flat Bed prints. Precise and technical in nature, these prints isolate the subject, laying the image onto Alan’s signature metallic background, that focuses the viewer’s eye on the sculptural, organic qualities of iconic cars and planes. Alan’s obsession with form, function and beauty, combined with his enduring passion for all things automotive and mechanical, align perfectly with Amalgam’s mission.

The Process

A reprographic technique that simulates continuous-tone imagery through the use of dots, thus generating a gradient-like effect, Alan's Half Tone artwork brings his traditional approach to screen printing into the contemporary digital world. Applied directly on to the brushed aluminium composite panels, the ink is then cured by a UV light that bonds it to the surface of the substrate, resulting in a resistant and long-lasting work of art that can even be displayed in outdoor exhibitions. This approach opens up endless ways to add texture and depth by building the image up in multiple layers, very much like the screen-printing process. The finished image is waterproof and very resistant to abrasion, so that there is no need to protect the art behind glass. The piece can be hung without a frame, creating a sharp and minimal presentation of the art floating less than an inch (15 mms) off of the wall. The piece can also be traditionally framed and hung if desired. Alan’s work in this medium brings exceptional precision, intensity, and glamour to the finished art.

Handling Your Print

Half Tone Flat Bed prints are supplied with a subframe attached to the back, enabling immediate ‘float’ effect hanging on the wall. The finished image is waterproof and very resistant to abrasion, so that there is no need to protect the art behind glass.

Half Tone Flat Bed Fine Art Prints of the Land Rover Series 2a are limited to just 300 copies. By purchasing this print, you agree and consent to your information being shared with Alan Thornton for use in the fulfilment of your order.

Great for big dogs
Size: Medium, Number of Items: 1
Our pup is now 15 months old (nearly 110 lb and still growing). We got this ball when he was 3 or 4 months old. GOODS - - Our pup fetches with extreme drive, and the rope helps him quickly snatch the ball off the ground (versus a tennis ball, in which we are worried he will go head over heels at times) - Our pup also loves to play fetch in the water, and this ball floats great and again, the rope gives another point to bite onto - The yellow color is easy to see, even in grass - Our pup typically fetches the ball, and leaves the rope mostly out of his mouth. So, throwing the ball doesn't result in saliva-covered hands - It's pretty easy to throw the ball 50', and possible to throw it 100' - It doesn't roll/bounce, so if you are for example playing fetch on your front lawn and are concerned with a tennis ball rolling into the street, this one alleviates that issue - Our pup is spoiled and has several balls. This is absolutely his go to ball. We have woken up in the morning before to see him standing next to the bed with the ball in his mouth, asking us to get up and play. BADS - - Occasionally when he goes to fetch it, he will step on the rope as he tries to pull up on the ball. - We have gotten this ball stuck in trees multiple times. In fact, there is one stuck on the roof of our church from playing fetch on the lawn there. :-/ Not a fault of the ball, but if you start whipping it around like nunchucks, it might not go where you want. - The near max you can through this ball is 100'. And since it doesn't roll/bounce, throw distance is throttled. We often play fetch in a local baseball field, and have no issue wearing him out with this ball. However, if you are planning on throwing a ball the distance of half a football field, you might want to consider something else. SIZE - - We purchased both the medium and the large. Even though our pup is huge and can fit a soccer ball in his mouth, he still prefers the medium. It's easier for him to get in his mouth and breath while running back. The medium is the size of an orange, whereas the large is the size of a grapefruit. DURABILITY - - We have gone through about 4 of these balls, BUT this is because we lost 3 of them. We believe he dropped one out of the car window while we were driving, one is on the roof of our church, and I forget about the other one. On the first one we had, the stitching behind the black tape was down to a few threads after about 5 months. Given duration we use these balls (every day) and the joy he gets from them, I feel the durability is good for the price. - We do play tug with the ball at times, and no issues there Enjoy!

Good but better options out there.
Good ball, but is a cheaper version of the Foamster sold online. The rope is cheap and comes apart, and can be abrasive to a dogs mouth. The Foamster uses a higher quality ball and are more durable and use grippy biothane straps rather than cheap rope. They are also made to order in the USA with lots of fun colors. Worth the extra money if your dog likes these balls.

Fun toy for fetch
Size: Medium, Number of Items: 1
Daisy loves this toy. I found it from her dog trainer, and it makes rewarding her with a quick tug of war and fetch really easy. Also it’s shockingly durable. It looks like foam, but she has not destroyed this one.

Sturdy and soft like hiking on clouds
Size: Large, Color: Color Mix
I am in love with these socks! In fact I've reordered five more times and have told my hiking friends about them, and they've ordered them now, too. We all love them. This is an excellent price for a 70% Merino wool sock. They wick away moisture & keep your feet nice and dry and comfortable in your boots. They're very cushiony yet your feet do not overheat. I bought these for the gym and for hiking. I actually hike about a hundred miles a month so I can tell you these socks go through a lot with me! The ankle cut socks are perfect for both my trail runners and my actual low ankle boots. The arch support keeps the sock firm on my foot and does not allow the sock to bunch up down towards the toe. The Merino wool helps to control moisture and my feet do not stink after a 6-7 mile hike. And oh my gosh they are so soft! It's like walking on clouds. I've had no issues with holes in the socks and will definitely update later if I do. I highly recommend these socks and tell your friends about them too
