Nicotinamide; A soluble form of vitamin B3, is an immune suppressant, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory that compensates for the auto-immune reaction of SLO.
Nicotinamide reduces the release of histamine from the mast cells in the skin between the claws/nails. Release of histamine by mast cells is normally an immune system reaction to allergens which can tend to be excessive and overreactive in some dogs. Histamine is similarly released by the auto-immune reaction in SLO.
When mast cells detect a substance that triggers an allergic reaction (an allergen), they release histamine and other chemicals into the bloodstream. Histamine makes the blood vessels expand and the surrounding skin itchy and swollen. Hence the itching and discomfort and the development of "hot spots".
Omega 3 Fatty Acids EPA and DHA; Research has clearly indicated that above average concentration of these fatty acids, found only in fish, improves cell wall efficiency in the skin.
