Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the world's greatest painters, his work having had a huge and far-reaching influence on 20th-century art as well as remaining visually and emotionally powerful to this day. Courtesan (after Eisen) illustrates Van Gogh's admiration for Japanese prints. His love for this style progressed from collecting prints for fun to it heavily influencing his work in later years. This painting is based on a woodcut by Japanese artist Keisai Eisen (1790-1842).
