Overview

The Bird’s Nest Coral (Seriatopora sp.) is a popular small-polyp stony (SPS) coral admired for its delicate, twig-like branches that intertwine to form dense, nest-shaped colonies. Polyps are fine and tightly spaced, creating a fuzzy appearance when extended. Colouration varies from pink, green, yellow, and purple to bright neon shades, depending on the species, lighting, and water conditions. Fast-growing and visually striking, Seriatopora adds height, structure, and vibrant movement to SPS or mixed reef systems.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, Tonga, and Indonesia. Typically found on upper reef slopes and lagoon areas, where it thrives under intense light and strong, turbulent currents.

Feeding

The Bird’s Nest Coral is photosynthetic, hosting zooxanthellae that supply the majority of its energy through photosynthesis. Supplemental feeding enhances growth and colour:

  • Marine microplankton or phytoplankton
  • Fine powdered coral foods (e.g., Reef-Roids)
  • Amino acid or trace element supplements

Feed 1–2 times per week to support active growth, especially in ultra-clean systems.

Lighting

High lighting required. This SPS coral thrives under bright, full-spectrum illumination from LED, T5, or metal halide lighting.

  • PAR range: 250–400 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Gradually acclimate to higher light intensity to prevent bleaching.
  • Intense lighting enhances pastel and neon pigmentation.
Water Flow

Strong, turbulent flow. Random and multidirectional currents are essential to keep the branches clean of detritus, deliver nutrients, and maintain oxygen exchange. Avoid direct, laminar jets that can damage fragile branches.

Placement
  • Position in the upper third of the tank, where light and flow are strongest.
  • Mount securely on stable rockwork or a coral plug — the branches are brittle and can break easily if disturbed.
  • Allow space around the colony for expansion and to prevent shading neighbouring corals.
Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Reef-safe fish such as gobies, tangs, clownfish, and wrasses
  • Invertebrates (shrimp, hermits, snails, urchins)
  • Other SPS corals with adequate spacing

Avoid:

  • Corals with long, stinging sweeper tentacles (e.g., Galaxea, Euphyllia)
  • Large angelfish or butterflyfish that may nip at polyps
Aggression

Peaceful.Seriatopora does not have long sweeper tentacles but is sensitive to contact from aggressive corals. Leave several centimetres of spacing to avoid tissue loss from chemical or physical irritation.

Experience Level

Intermediate to advanced. While hardy once established, the Bird’s Nest Coral requires stable water chemistry, strong light, and consistent flow to maintain health and vibrant colouration. Suitable for reef keepers comfortable managing SPS water parameters.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
  • Hardness (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons (280L) for stability and adequate flow zones

Regular testing and dosing of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium are essential for skeletal growth and resilience.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. A showpiece coral that adds dimension and colour to SPS and mixed reefs. Its intricate, branching structure provides natural shelter for small reef fish and invertebrates, creating a realistic reef environment.

Lower Cholesterol and Better Digestion, Even if the Taste Takes Getting Used To
Size: 2.32 Pound (Pack of 1), Style: New
I started using this fiber supplement after my doctor recommended it to help manage my cholesterol. I like that it’s plant-based and sugar-free, and it’s easy to mix into water. After taking it regularly, I’ve noticed a positive impact on my digestion, and I’m hopeful it will help with my cholesterol in the long run. The only thing is that the taste and texture aren’t quite what I expected — it’s a bit like protein powder. Still, the health benefits make it worth continuing

Great Product, Works as Advertised
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
This product works exactly as described. It makes BM's smoother and gentler. I personally use the unflavored, no sweeteners added version, and honestly, it does not taste very good, but I feel that the results are worth it, and I do not like adding extra sweeteners or flavorings to my diet. I have used this product for many years and have found that about 1 1/2 to 2 tbsps in 12 ounces of water works the best for me. You will need to experiment a bit to find the ratio that works best for you. I recommend that you start on the low side and gradually increase the amount of Metamucil as needed.

Healthy, Effective, and great when mixed with Splenda and Koolaid mix. The best of many options I've tried.
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
I've sampled a few different varieties of fiber supplements, including both Benefiber and off-brands, and I found that Metamucil provided the most fiber in the least offensive beverage. Compared to the other brands, this stuff is smoother textured, and goes down easier, as a sort of happy medium between the grittier supplements and the thicker ones. What about effectiveness? I have apocalyptic IBS, and since starting to take this stuff regularly (one giant glass every morning and evening), my BMs have been much more regular, and more manageable. Flare-ups happen less, and it even seems to do a decent job when taken with meals of cutting the hit to my stomach and gut. I tend to take more than the recommended amount, with an even larger serving of water, as I feel like it helps me stay hydrated and full throughout the day. I started taking the classic orange Metamucil, but although I really liked the superior flavor (rather like Orange Tang) it packed several times more sugar in each serving than fiber, so while it was great for digestive health, the overall health impact was too negative. I also sampled the sugar-free berry flavors, but found that, although it was ostensibly healthier, the flavor wasn't great, and in addition it suffered from the aspartame aftertaste and further effects (Aspartame gives me headaches). So this was a dilemma for me. What to do? I actually wrote to Metamucil about it, and they recommended this product. The downside is that it comes with absolutely no flavor, so you need to provide your own in order to mask the texture (I wouldn't dream of trying to mix this in plain water--yuck!) The upside is they pack 100+ servings into a container, and you really are free to blend it into whatever suits your fancy. Obviously if you mix it with something like orange juice, then you're already negating the benefits of this stuff over the sugary orange flavor, but I've personally found a much better way. I like to mix this stuff with Kool-aid mix and Splenda (Sucralose) sweetener. I buy a ton of Splenda and kool-aid as it mixes up tasting sweet, like sugar, but without the calories or aftertaste. You can dump a spoonful of this stuff into a glass of splenda-koolaid, or just dump 8 servings worth of this stuff in with a packet of koolaid powder and a cup of splenda, and then just mix it up and spoon it into water as needed. Better tasting, sugar-free and packed with good useful fiber. EDIT: I wish I could subscribe to this stuff. Price of splenda has gone up, but I've figured out thatyou can just dump 7 packets of koolaid mix and 7 dashes of sucralose into a container of this and shake it up.
