Achilles Tang – Acanthurus achilles

Overview:
The Achilles Tang is a striking and vibrant marine herbivore, instantly recognizable by its deep black body, bright orange patch near the tail, and subtle white markings on the dorsal fin. Its bold coloration and active swimming make it a dramatic focal point in large reef aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, primarily found on coral reefs and lagoons around Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, and other central Pacific regions.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous – thrives on marine algae, seaweed, and spirulina-based foods, supplemented occasionally with meaty foods like mysis shrimp for a balanced diet and vibrant coloration.

Tank Mates:
Best housed with peaceful to moderately semi-aggressive fish. Avoid very small or timid species to reduce stress and territorial disputes.

Aggression:
Moderately territorial – may defend feeding or swimming areas, particularly in smaller tanks, but generally compatible in spacious, well-maintained aquariums.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced aquarists – requires a mature aquarium with ample swimming space, stable water conditions, and a proper herbivore diet.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Minimum Tank Size: 150+ gallons

The Achilles Tang is a visually striking, active herbivore, ideal for reef or large community marine tanks where a bold, dynamic centerpiece is desired.

Clear, straight forward, and authoritative
Format: Paperback
Excellent, straightforward information about how to stay safe at the crag. Every guy who's put his hand on a rock has an opinion about how to set anchors, belay, etc -- this book gives you the answers on how to do things the right way. Spend the 10 or 15 bucks and read the book. It might save your life.

A great read.
Format: Paperback
Wow. Just finished reading this series. I agree that of the three books, this is the most accessible. Beautifully written and put me in mind of bardos in The Tibetan Book of the Dead. A great read. I’ll keep this book for a long time.
