A particularly unusual and striking Victorian Essex crystal ring, combining delicate miniature carving with the sparkle of precious gemstones. A sort after design then and now. 

At the centre of the ring sits a beautifully carved Essex crystal, depicting the portrait of a dog. The image has been carefully carved into the reverse of the domed crystal and hand painted, creating the lifelike depth that Essex crystals are so admired for. The artist has captured an incredible level of character and detail in the dog’s expression and features. 

While we cannot say with certainty which breed is depicted, the distinct features and thoughtful detailing suggest it was likely intended to represent a specific and beloved dog. Enthusiasts and breed lovers may very well recognise it immediately!

What makes this example especially special is the gemstone set border surrounding the crystal. Framing the scene is a glittering halo of alternating rubies and diamonds, adding rich colour and sparkle that beautifully complements the miniature portrait at the centre. The warm gold setting adding a tactile touch.

MATERIAL/HALLMARK: 9ct band with a setting of 15 carat 

Condition: Overall lovely antique condition with only a fine patina across the gold, dome and stones. As noted above the original painted colours have faded in a few small areas within the setting. One ruby looks like a lager replacement as it's ever so slightly larger.
