The Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) is the rarest great ape in the world — and the most recently identified. Described as a distinct species only in 2017, it now numbers fewer than 800 individuals, all confined to a shrinking patch of forest in northern Sumatra.
Threatened by deforestation, road construction, and fragmentation of its highland habitat, this critically endangered primate may vanish before most people ever know it existed.
