Beach plum, native to the northeastern seaboard, is commonly found in sandy coastal environments, including dunes, meadows, and open fields. This resilient shrub is well adapted to its environment, exhibiting notable tolerance to both salt and cold — traits it shares, perhaps humorously, with the region’s dedicated surfing community.
In spring, the beach plum produces delicate white blossoms, which mature into fruit by late summer or early autumn. These flowers and fruits serve as an important food source, attracting a wide range of wildlife, including insects, moths, birds, bees, and butterflies.
