How do I use this Ironing Board Pad?

The Ironing Board Felted Wool Pad measures 135cm x 50cm and can be cut down to size if it’s too big for your board. We tested a couple of ways to cut it down and found the easiest way is to lay the felt on top of your ironing board (make sure it covers it all), weigh it down using your iron (make sure it’s not on!) and then just cut around the edge with a pair of scissors. Cut it down to the size of your board so it fits perfectly. That’s basically it! All you have to do now is remove the cover, replace the foam or felt that was already there and then pop the cover back on!

Another way to measure and cut the right size of felt would be to lay the pad on the floor and place your ironing board on top, face down. Then draw (or cut) around it. It shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes to do – it’s that simple.

Make sure you properly dispose of the foam or felt you no longer need – or, depending on its condition, maybe you can get creative with it and use it for something else!

Why use a felted wool pad?

There are only really two types of pads that are used on ironing boards – foam and felt.

Felt is the more sought-after padding when it comes to ironing boards. Our Felted Wool Pad provides a cushioned underlay while you’re ironing, is naturally permeable to allow steam to pass through it, and has high thermal absorption, keeping hold of heat to help get rid of those creases faster. The heat retention makes ironing faster, easier and more enjoyable – a nice change from a painfully long chore!

Our Felted Wool Pad will make you feel like you have a brand new ironing board! It gives you a smooth surface, so you won’t be making more creases as you try to iron them out. It’s not an ironing board cover though and should be placed under the cover as a thick base.

The alternative to a felt pad would be a foam pad. These thin foam pads tend to come as standard on most ironing boards as they are cheaper to buy. Although they do a similar job, they aren’t as good. They wear down quicker and get flatter and flatter with each use. While they do bounce back when you’re not ironing, the more you use them, the more they will lose their shape. Foam is not permeable meaning steam cannot pass through it and the flatter it gets, the more likely it is that you will end up with water dripping from the bottom. A flat pad is more prone to move around when you’re trying to iron. All of this means that ironing will be more difficult and will take longer, and no one wants to make such a chore intentionally harder, right?

That’s not all, though. Since foam pads wear down quicker, they need to be replaced more often and this creates more waste. Our wool pads stay better for longer and are 100% compostable once they’ve reached the end of their long life, so not only are they better for the environment, but they’re more cost-effective too!

What is it made from?

As I’m sure you already know, we hate waste here at Chimney Sheep and we do everything we can to minimise our own. The Ironing Board Felted Wool Pad is made using off-cuts from our Chimney Sheep draught excluders mixed in with raw, washed Herdwick wool. We use offcuts for other things too; like our Felt Garden Mulch Shillies.

Excellent Tool for Approaching Homer via English
Format: Hardcover
I love the Loeb editions of Homer. I've already ready the Odyssey, now moving on to the Iliad. What I've especially started to enjoy with this volume of the Iliad is the editors decision to "call out" which lines were rejected by which ancient commentators (Aristarchus, etc.). This adds some fun to the reading because you get to review the line in Greek and try to surmise why they rejected it, or how the passage would work without the line. The translation is reasonably modern but still "lordly" and has the tone of a war epic. It was enjoyable to read aloud in both English and Greek.
