Michael Barry directs this thought-provoking story starring Jared Martin as an ambitious San Francisco independent filmmaker determined to create a daring new film. He casts the mysterious and beautiful Suzanne, played by Sondra Locke, as a modern female Christ figure. As production progresses, his artistic vision becomes increasingly obsessive and unsettling.
Paul Sand co-stars as Suzanne’s artist boyfriend, while Richard Dreyfuss appears as a concerned member of the film crew who watches the bizarre behavior of the production spiral out of control — ultimately leading to a shocking climax when Suzanne is crucified on a nearby hill as part of the film.
Inspired in part by the lyrics of the Suzanne by Leonard Cohen, the film also features Gene Barry in a supporting role as a television presenter.
Shot in 1972 but not released until 1974, The Second Coming of Suzanne generated mixed reviews and modest box office returns, yet it attracted attention for its daring subject matter and a controversial love scene between Locke and Sand that pushed the boundaries of early-1970s cinema.
