French Red Shallots, with their excellent mild, rich onion flavor, are an indispensable staple in French cuisine. These mid-sized, very tasty shallots add depth and complexity to dishes, making them a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike. If you're interested in cultivating these flavorful bulbs in your own garden, here's everything you need to know about growing French Red Shallots.

Soil Requirements

French Red Shallots thrive in fertile, well-drained soil. While they are very tolerant and can be grown in acidic soil with a pH as low as 5.0, they prefer soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.8. Before planting, it's essential to prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.

Planting Time

French Red Shallots are typically planted in the fall for a late spring or early summer harvest. Planting shallot bulbs in the fall allows them to establish roots before the onset of winter. However, they can also be planted in early spring as soon as the soil is workable.

To successfully grow shallots, it's crucial to pay attention to the pH levels of the soil. These shallots thrive in soil with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 6.8, ensuring optimal nutrient uptake and healthy growth. However, maintaining the correct pH levels is just one aspect of cultivating vibrant shallot plants. Nutrient deficiency can pose a challenge, affecting the overall health and productivity of the crop.

Therefore, it's essential to provide adequate nutrition through balanced fertilization, addressing any deficiencies that may arise. By carefully monitoring pH levels and addressing nutrient deficiencies, gardeners can ensure that their French Red Shallots flourish, providing a bountiful harvest of flavorful bulbs to complement a variety of fruits and vegetables in culinary creations.

Planting Depth and Spacing

Plant shallot bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards, at a depth of 1 to 2 inches in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches apart. Space the bulbs 6 to 8 inches apart within the rows to allow for proper bulb development.

Watering and Mulching

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the early stages of growth. Mulching around the shallot plants with organic material such as straw or shredded leaves helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and maintains a more stable soil temperature.

Fertilization

French Red Shallots benefit from regular fertilization to support healthy growth and bulb development. Apply a balanced fertilizer high in phosphorus (the middle number in the N-P-K ratio) at planting time and side-dress with additional fertilizer once the shallots begin actively growing.

Weed Control

Keep the area around the shallot plants free from weeds, as weeds can compete with shallots for nutrients, water, and sunlight. Regularly remove weeds by hand or use mulch to suppress weed growth.

Pest and Disease Management

French Red Shallots are relatively pest and disease resistant. However, they may occasionally be susceptible to pests such as onion thrips or diseases such as white rot. Practice crop rotation and maintain good garden hygiene to minimize the risk of pests and diseases.

Harvesting

French Red Shallots undergo a gradual plant growth process over a long period, making them an ideal spring plant. As they mature, the tops of the shallot plants gradually turn brown, signaling readiness for harvest. This extended growth period allows the shallots to develop their characteristic rich flavor and firm texture, perfect for enhancing a variety of culinary dishes.

French Red Shallots are ready for harvest when the tops begin to yellow and dry out, usually in late spring or early summer, approximately 90 to 120 days after planting. Carefully lift the shallot bulbs from the soil using a garden fork, taking care not to damage the bulbs. Allow the bulbs to cure in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area for 1 to 2 weeks to improve flavor and storage quality.

French Red Shallots, renowned for their exquisite flavor and versatility, are a quintessential ingredient in French cooking. Planted in the spring, these shallots undergo a gradual but steady growth process over a long period, culminating in a flavorful harvest. Their delicate yet robust taste enhances a myriad of dishes, from savory sauces to hearty stews.

Additionally, when paired with tender green beans, French Red Shallots impart a subtle sweetness and depth of flavor, elevating the simplest of dishes to gourmet status. With their unique culinary charm and enduring appeal, French Red Shallots remain a beloved staple in both professional kitchens and home cook's gardens alike.

Storage

Once cured, French Red Shallots can be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location for several months. Store them in mesh bags or wooden crates to allow for air circulation and prevent molding or sprouting.

Propagation

French Red Shallots can be propagated by planting individual cloves or by dividing the bulbs into smaller sections before planting. Smaller bulbs may produce fewer bulbs per clump but tend to produce larger individual bulbs, whereas larger bulbs may result in more bulbs per clump but of smaller size.

Growing French Red Shallots is a rewarding endeavor that allows you to enjoy the rich, mild flavor of these versatile bulbs straight from your garden. By following these guidelines for soil preparation, planting, care, and harvest, you can cultivate a bountiful harvest of delicious shallots to enhance your culinary creations.

Same fluid as the Subaru brand
Size: 5 Quart, Style: 1 Pack
This is the manufacturer that makes the Subaru cvt fluid. I used this for the drain and fill on a 2019 Subaru Forester. No problem using a hand pump to fill the transmission. Excellent product will use again to service a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek.

2010 Subaru Outback CVT fluid 👍
Size: 5 Quart, Style: 1 Pack
2010 Subaru Outback CVT ... have been using this for several thousand miles instead of OEM fluid, and works just fine ... if your subie takes the "green" CVT fluid, this works excellent! I even used this after dropping the CVT valve body and replacing the lock up solenoid, so I had to replace with almost exactly 10 qts of fluid.

It Works! (Mustang 2016 ecoboost knocking noise)
Style: Modifier
I recently experienced a remarkable transformation in my 2016 Mustang Ecoboost, thanks to the LIQUI MOLY Oil Additive Cera Tec 3721. As someone with a passion for automobiles and a background as a software engineer, I'm always on the lookout for ways to improve my vehicle's performance. This product turned out to be a game-changer. One of the issues I had been facing with my Mustang was a persistent knocking noise, which can be quite concerning for any car enthusiast. After researching potential solutions, I decided to give LIQUI MOLY Cera Tec 3721 a try. And I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the results. The primary reason I opted for this oil additive was its promise of ceramic wear and tear protection. As someone who values the longevity of my vehicles, I wanted to reduce engine friction and wear as much as possible. This product did exactly that. The moment I started using it, I noticed a significant reduction in engine noise, especially the knocking sound that had been bothering me. It provided a smoother engine performance, and the difference was noticeable. What impressed me even more was the impact on fuel consumption. As someone who loves to travel and has explored six states during my time in the USA, fuel efficiency is a key concern. LIQUI MOLY Cera Tec 3721 not only improved my engine's performance but also led to lower fuel consumption. This means fewer stops at the gas station and more miles of adventure. Moreover, being a mentor and research assistant, I appreciate the science behind this product. It's clear that LIQUI MOLY has put considerable effort into developing a high-quality additive that benefits both petrol and diesel engines. This is the kind of innovation that I believe will shape the future of the automotive industry. In conclusion, LIQUI MOLY Oil Additive Cera Tec 3721 has not only fixed the knocking noise in my Mustang but has also enhanced its overall performance. It's a product that aligns with my goal of staying at the forefront of technology and innovation in the IT sector, even when it comes to my car. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve engine performance, reduce friction, and achieve better fuel efficiency. It's a small investment with significant returns for your vehicle.

Skeptical...... to Believer
Style: Modifier, Style: Modifier
I've waited awhile to write this review, to see how time effected my opinion. A little background, my daughter really wanted a 328i, so I went out and found a clean, single owner vehicle with a little over 100k on it. Its the family's first BMW, but as a mechanic I've seen and worked on them all. The BMW N52 engine seems overly complicated for what it does. Power output and economy are just average even though its got just about every bell and whistle including variable valve timing. One thing that struck me was how noisy it was. Kinda like a quiet sewing machine. I changed the oil to Mobil 1 0w/40 Euro blend and she drove it for 7k miles. During this time I read up on all the LL/01 oils for this car, so next oil change I used Castrol Edge, which is LL/01 certified. No difference. Car runs well, still sounds like a sewing machine. 7k more miles go by, and I learn about this CeraTec additive, and decide to give it a try based on all the good reviews. Yup, looks like a Orange Julius!! Well, I dump it it, and take it around the block. Engine seems a little quieter and smoother, but figure its my brain screwing with me. I slam the hood, and give my daughter the keys back, and off she goes. And here's where it gets interesting.... My 19 year old daughter doesnt know squat about cars. She a 100% gas it up and go girl. So about 2 weeks after the CeraTec goes in we are sitting at the dinner table and she says... " Oh Daddy, I forgot to thank you for tuning up my car". I ask her what makes her think I did? She replies that since the last service its much smoother idling at red lights and its quieter. (Remember, she's driven it for 7500 miles at this point) I asked her how could she tell, as the radio is always at least half volume. She says when its running and she's got the window down ordering at a drive -thru it used to go "tickity-tickity" ( her words)as it echo'ed off the building.. and now its silent. I go out and fire it up and roll down the window and stick my head out.... yup. Silent and verrry smooth. She also has average MPG constantly on display , and its improved about .65 mpg. So, if you add all that up, it seems to work. Liqui-Moly says its lasts 30k miles. I service the car every 7k, so we'll see if this all stays the same after a service, which is coming up soon. The car uses zero oil between services, so I cant comment on that. But from a smoothness, quietness point of view, if my daughter noticed it without me prompting her, I would say thats what made me a believer more than anything. Thanks Liqui-Moly.
