The fascinating story of this icon of classic motoring, beautifully told by award-winning authors Chas Parker and Philip Porter, has already won plaudits from readers, being described by Motorsport Magazine as ‘generously illustrated, comprehensively researched and pleasingly decorated with race programmes, letters and receipts’.

The car went on to have a busy post-works racing career, first with Ecurie Ecosse, then with privateer drivers Bill Smith and Geoffrey Allison. Among its small number of collector custodians in later years, the names of Briggs Cunningham and Adrian Hamilton (son of Duncan) stand out. All this is covered in fascinating detail, supported by a fine collection of period photographs. Any Jaguar enthusiast will love this book.

Key content

  • Development - focusing on the three lightweights of 1953 with thinner-gauge aluminium bodies, pioneering disc brakes and aircraft-style fuel tanks.
  • The story of the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours told in full, with extensive illustration and behind-the-scenes insights drawn from period interviews with many participants.
  • Action with Ecurie Ecosse in 1954 and early 1955, taking in 13 race meetings with drivers such as Ninian Sanderson, Peter Walker, James Scott-Douglas and Desmond Titterington.
  • The privateer racing period: Bill Smith in 1955, the car repainted red, until his death while racing another of his cars; Geoffrey Allison in 1956, the car repainted white.
  • Later life, first in America, where notable racer and collector Briggs Cunningham was the owner for 18 years, followed by a return to the UK in the hands of Adrian Hamilton (Duncan’s son) for over 20 years.
  • Nearly 300 period images, many previously unpublished, supported by a portfolio of studio photography.
  • Limited Edition

Limited to only 100 copies and signed by the authors, Chas Parker and Philip Porter, and Adrian Hamilton, son of Duncan, whose memories enliven much of the book.

    The Author

Chas Parker swapped a career in astronomy, where he was Press Officer for the Royal Greenwich Observatory, for one writing about motor sport. Along the way he edited a computer magazine for Hewlett-Packard business users and provided copywriting services to companies such as Air Miles, Elf Oil and South East Water. He also contributed to Patrick Moore’s ‘Yearbook of Astronomy’ and the ‘Philip’s Astronomy Encyclopedia’.

For a time he was motoring correspondent for ‘Sussex Life’ magazine and then worked for seven years as a sub-editor on ‘Motorsport News’, for which he still contributes race reports, particularly on the Goodwood Revival and Members’ Meetings, along with occasional articles for publications such as ‘Autosport’ and ‘Motor Sport’. He is the author of five books, including comprehensive histories of Brands Hatch and Silverstone, both published by Haynes. He lives in East Sussex with his partner Diane and has two sons, Jon and Will.

Philip Porter is the author of around 30 motoring books. In an action-packed life, he started competing in hillclimbs and sprints while still at school, winning 10 of his 12 events in 1970 in his full-race Sprite. Bitten by the classic car bug, he bought five Jaguar XKs in 1973 (four of which he still has) and his historic E-types (9600 HP, the oldest E-type which was the development, launch, press car, and 848 CRY, the '61 racer and roadster in the film The Italian Job) in 1976. He began writing articles and books in the mid-'80s. In parallel he began flying hot air balloons and airships competitively (European Airship Championships Silver Medallist) and was the first person ever to fly an airship in Africa. He has twice been Chairman of the Sherlock Holmes Society and in 1997 he and his wife Julie formed the International Jaguar XK Club, the Jaguar E-type Club following in 2004. In 2005, he created Porter Press International, which is now one of the world's leading motoring publishers thanks to the amazing team with which Philip is immensely proud to work.

Beckham Hotel Collection 22 Momme Silk Pillowcase
Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen, Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen
This is a 100% Mulberry silk pillowcase (22 momme, 6A grade) in the Cherry Pink color, Queen size. Unboxing and Prep Out of the box, the silk had noticeable deep creases from being folded. I hand washed it and air dried it, but the wrinkles remained. I used a steam iron at approximately 300F with a flour sack towel as a pressing cloth to protect the fabric. It took two passes to get most of the wrinkles out, but the silk held its sheen well throughout the process. Zipper and Construction The zipper tracks are hidden behind a fabric flap so you don't feel the teeth. However, the zipper pull is not fully integrated or tucked away; it hangs free at the end of the track. The pull is small enough that it hasn't been an issue or gotten in the way during use, but it's worth noting it isn't completely "invisible." Fit and Quality The Cherry Pink is a very light, subtle shade. The 22 momme weight feels substantial and opaque. I paired this with a high-loft Sobel Westex Bellazure Duo (feather and down) pillow. The Queen size fits perfectly and the silk stays smooth and cool. Final Thoughts The build quality is solid and the Oeko-TEX certification is a nice touch. To get the best results, you really need to pair this with a high-quality, fluffy pillow to fill out the case properly. On a flat or low-density pillow, it wouldn't look or perform nearly as well. It requires some maintenance with the hand washing and ironing, but the feel is much better than thinner 19 momme options.

Luxuriously Soft & Cooling, But Needs a Wider Opening
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I really enjoy sleeping on the Beckham Hotel Collection Silk Pillowcase—it has such a silky, smooth feel that makes a noticeable difference in comfort. It feels wonderful against the skin and hair, and I especially love how it helps keep my head cool throughout the night, which leads to a restful sleep. The color choices are also wonderful and look very rich, adding a nice elegant touch to the bed. It’s also held up nicely in the wash, which is always a plus for something this delicate. That said, I’m giving it 4 stars because of the zipper opening design. You lose about 4 inches of usable space at the opening, which makes it harder than expected to insert a pillow. Unlike other zippered pillowcases I own, the ends don’t open wide enough, so I had to squeeze my pillow in—and I actually noticed the stitching starting to pull a bit because of it. A wider opening would make a big difference. Overall, it’s great to sleep on and feels luxurious, but for the price, I do think the design could be improved.

Best Pillow I’ve bought in a while
Fill Material: Down Alternative, Size: King Size
Very comfy pillow. Holds up better than the last 7 I bought which went flat after a week. It also comes with extra fill which I have not had to use yet but overall very happy!

    Cozy & Comfortable
Fill Material: Down Alternative, Size: Queen/Standard Size
This pillow was a big surprise! Despite the size, it is so soft & comfortable. Being able to add & subtracting filling is wonderful. It's like having a custom pillow just for me. I am a stomach sleeper. I am able to cuddle the pillow & be very comfortable. Plus it recovers it's shape.
