At 11 cm, the king is a stately and elegant figure with his intricate finial and double banding detail on his collar. He, along with every piece in this set, is perfectly weighted for balance and has billiard cloth applied to their bases to protect your board.

You will notice that the kings in this set are branded at the base with the words “1851”. These ebony reproduction pieces also carry the distinguishable markings of the king's crown on one white knight and one white rook, and one black knight, one black rook. As we know, these pieces will sit on the king's flank. This was a practical idea to identify their position on the king’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queen's knight' or the ‘king’s rook’. As you would expect from a luxury set, this set of chessmen offers two additional queens for promotion.

The high-quality grade of ebony and boxwood used to create this set makes it not only an enviable acquisition but also a worthy investment and phenomenal heirloom for future generations.

Due to the king’s height and broad base, we have matched these lovely chessmen with an extra-large chessboard produced by master chessboard maker Rechapados Ferrer of Spain. It's difficult not to be impressed by this extra-large chessboard. High-grade walnut and maple veneered construction is used throughout, including the base. Modern fabrication techniques are applied to provide a truly remarkable chessboard with clean lines and critical detailing. The walnut used has stunning colouring with dense grain, abundant in dark, rich tones.

We have added this beautifully made chess piece cabinet for when your chessmen are not in play. Crafted from mahogany, this lovely box has deep reddish hues, which are complemented by the brass hinges and lock.

Inside, the interior is lined with green flocking to protect your prize pieces. It is important to note that they will only fit lying down, which is quite normal. Wooden pieces are hardwood and will come to no harm.
