Fitting and handling
Mark your post position and use a post driver or heavy mallet with an offcut of timber to protect the socket, driving the spike to full depth so the collar sits flush with the ground. Check for plumb on both faces before driving fully home, as correction is difficult once the spike is set. Drop your 100mm x 100mm post into the socket and secure with the fixing bolts provided through the pre-drilled collar holes.
FAQ
Will a 750mm drive-in spike hold a fence post securely in soft or clay ground?
Yes. The 750mm anchor depth provides a firm hold in most domestic ground conditions including clay and loam. On very soft or waterlogged ground, driving to full depth is important, and a post driver rather than a standard mallet is recommended to keep the spike true and straight during installation.
Do I need to treat the timber post where it sits inside the spike socket?
It is good practice to apply an end-grain preservative to the base of the post before fitting, as the socket can trap moisture against the timber end grain over time. Using a UC4 rated or pressure-treated post will give the best long-term performance alongside the galvanised spike.
Is hot dipped galvanising better than electro-galvanised for outdoor post fixings?
Hot dipped galvanising deposits a significantly thicker zinc coating than electro-galvanising, making it far more suitable for permanent outdoor and ground-contact applications. For fence posts and garden structures that will be exposed to rain and soil contact year-round, hot dipped is the correct specification.
