They're just easier on the joints (two acl reconstructions and a spinal fusion from T2 to L2) and a plate in my wrist. This mat is great. I also like the 72" length because I'm about 5'9 so I'm not hanging off the mat. I've been practicing yoga for over 15 years and have my CYT 200 even though I don't teach, and I would highly recommend this mat.
