The Namiki Chinkin Emperor Fountain Pen in Peony brings the quiet drama of traditional Japanese urushi art to Namiki’s largest writing instrument. In the Emperor format, the uninterrupted, clipless silhouette becomes a generous canvas for the chinkin peony motif, its petals and leaves hand-engraved into lacquer and inlaid with precious metal to create a design that glows softly against a deep, lustrous black.

Craftsmanship & Design

Chinkin is a centuries-old technique practiced within Namiki’s urushi atelier, distinct from maki-e yet harmoniously paired with it in the brand’s portfolio. Artisans first build the pen’s surface with multiple layers of urushi lacquer over Japanese ebonite, polishing between coats to achieve a rich roiro sheen. Using fine chisels, they incise precise lines and dot work into the cured lacquer, then charge the engraved recesses with gold to create subtle relief and enduring contrast. The peony, a symbol of prosperity and elegance in Japanese art, is rendered with quiet depth and textural nuance; each stroke reflects the artisan’s hand, so no two examples are exactly alike.

The Emperor scale is purposeful: its clipless form preserves the continuity of the artwork and affords a stately presence in hand. The proportions are balanced for long sessions, with a gently tapering profile that sits securely while showcasing the motif in uninterrupted panorama.

Writing Experience

At the heart of the pen is Namiki’s oversized No. 50 18k gold nib, tuned by specialist nib artisans for responsive, confident flow. Paired with an ebonite feed, it delivers a steady ink supply and a composed, generously wet line that flatters high-quality papers. Available in fine, medium, or broad, the nib offers a range of character: a precise, softly tactile feel in fine; a balanced, daily-writing cadence in medium; and a fuller signature line in broad. Start-up and consistency are hallmarks, with the feed and tipping geometry working together for smoothness without losing the subtle feedback many enthusiasts appreciate.

The eyedropper filling system with a shut-off valve provides significant ink capacity. A simple twist of the blind cap opens flow for writing and closes it for secure transport, minimizing the risk of leakage under pressure changes. It is a time-honored mechanism chosen for reliability and for the unbroken exterior it allows the artist’s work to inhabit.

Provenance

Namiki is the artisanal expression of Pilot in Japan, recognized worldwide for its urushi and decorative lacquer arts. Within this atelier, chinkin engraving is executed by master craftspeople who sustain traditional methods while refining them for modern use. The Emperor Peony reflects that lineage: a convergence of material knowledge, hand-skill, and restrained symbolism that rewards close study as much as it does daily writing.

These bracelets work but with caveats. I got them because sometimes I want to take quick walks outside, but don't want to put on sticky big spray and have to shower 2x a day because of the spray. Enter these bracelets. 1st caveat: they fairly quickly decrease in efficacy, which makes me feel guilty for creating so much non compostable/recyclable waste relatively quickly. I have a neighbor with a swampy pool that causes a bunch of mosquitos in the neighborhood in the summer. Without the bracelets, I got 14 bites when going outside for 1 hour. With the bracelets (1st wear and one per limb), I got none. 2nd caveat: I have found that I need 1 bracelet per limb in order to avoid bites. For a nighttime Joshua tree stargazing outing with a friend, we each only put one on and both got bit up like crazy. Later, I gave the bracelets another chance. I put one on each elbow and one on each knee. Wore them and then put them back in the pouches for later use. No bites. Used them a 2nd and 3rd time with no bites, but got 4 bites today with the 4th use, which indicates they're at their effective end of life at around 3 or 4 wears. Overall, they work if you make sure you have a little citronella bubble around you by putting one on each limb, but they generate a relatively large amount of waste for the amount of protection they provide, and the protection itself can be spotty. If your only goal is to not use chemical spray on your skin, these bracelets meet it. If your goal is solely to not get bit, spray might be a better choice.

Great gift for keeping the mosquitoes away!
Size: Pack of 10, Set name: Classic
My significant other loves to take hikes in the woods and for now, it is bug free, but that won't last long here in Minnesota! I gave him these insect repellent bracelets before and he really appreciated them. He doesn't like spraying bug repellant on himself or his clothing, so these bracelets are the ticket for him! I tucked them in a gift bag along with some trail mix for his next hiking adventure. He loved them! You will, too!
