During the American Civil War, French military fashion was all the rage — especially the flamboyant uniforms of the French Zouave light infantry. Clad in flowing pantaloons, richly embroidered jackets, and distinctive headgear, over 70 Zouave regiments served in the Union Army, with a few fighting for the Confederacy. Originally raised as light skirmishers, some Zouaves transitioned to line infantry as the war progressed, while others proudly maintained their unique dress and elite status throughout the conflict.
