Organic Early Purple Italian Garlic is a flavorful softneck variety known for its eye-catching purple-streaked bulbs and reliable garden performance. Each bulb typically holds 8–12 cloves wrapped in tan skins beneath a decorative white and purple outer layer. With a mild, classic garlic taste, this variety is a kitchen staple—perfect for raw dishes, roasting, and everything in between.

This variety thrives in warmer climates and excels with a fall planting schedule, maturing by early to midsummer. Early Purple Italian Garlic grows vigorously in fertile, well-drained soil and responds well to consistent moisture. Widely grown around Gilroy, California—the “Garlic Capital of the World”—this softneck garlic is an excellent choice for dependable harvests and long-term storage.

Beloved by chefs and home gardeners alike, this variety combines appealing flavor, attractive coloring, and adaptability. Whether you’re planting for performance or flavor, Early Purple Italian delivers both. Its mild, balanced heat and smooth texture make it ideal for year-round culinary use, from dressings to roasts to homemade garlic bread.

  • Softneck Garlic with purple-striped wrappers and tan-skinned cloves.
  • Approximately 8–12 cloves per bulb and 5–6 bulbs per pound.
  • Mild flavor with subtle sweetness and mellow warmth.
  • Ideal for fall planting; grows well in warm climates.
  • Thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil; harvest in early to midsummer.
  • Excellent storage life; a favorite for raw and cooked dishes.
  • Grown in Washington and popular around Gilroy, CA.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

  • Flavor Profile: Early Purple Italian garlic is prized for its mild yet savory flavor that deepens when roasted. This softneck variety delivers a mellow warmth and subtle sweetness, making it a versatile choice for fresh dishes like salsas and salad dressings, as well as rich soups, sauces, and oven-roasted meals.

  • Aroma Profile: When crushed or minced, the cloves release a gentle, comforting aroma that’s less pungent than stronger varieties. The scent intensifies during cooking, contributing a savory richness to everything from sautés to stews. The aromatic presence is perfect for infusing both subtle and bold flavor profiles.

Planting Time

Early Purple Italian Garlic is typically planted in the fall, 4–6 weeks before the first expected frost, to ensure root development before winter. In warmer regions, it may also be planted in early spring. Fall planting is preferred to encourage robust growth and large bulb formation.

Softneck Growth Habit

Unlike hardneck varieties, this softneck garlic does not produce scapes, which makes it easier to braid and store. Its flexible stalks and long shelf life make it a popular variety for both market growers and home gardeners who value extended storage and minimal maintenance.

Storage and Preservation

How to Store Fresh Garlic

After harvesting in early to midsummer, allow the green tops to dry and turn fully brown for proper curing. Hang or lay the softneck bulbs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space. Curing enhances the garlic’s flavor and ensures optimal storage conditions, keeping bulbs fresh for months.

Preserving Garlic for Long-Term Use

To extend storage life, wait for the foliage to brown before harvesting. Cure the bulbs in an airy environment to maintain their smooth texture and rich flavor. This softneck garlic adds depth to everything from sauces to marinades while retaining freshness long after harvest.

Best Practices for Drying and Freezing

Freezing cured garlic is an excellent way to preserve its flavor. Depending on your cooking needs, freeze whole bulbs, individual cloves (peeled or unpeeled), or minced portions. Avoid freezing freshly harvested (uncured) garlic, as excess moisture can lead to a mushy texture and diminished flavor after thawing.

Charger works great, tray is solid
Color: Best Dad-brown, Color: Best Dad-brown
I've only used wireless chargers in passing before, and always had issues with them consistently 'activating.' I've had no issues with this one at all, the tray makes it very easy to line it up. Slide the phone all the way into the groove and it's charged flawlessly for me. My phone does have a case, though it's not a very thick one like an otterbox, which I imagine would make the charging more inconsistent. The tray as a whole is very solidly built and well made, it is listed as 'vegan leather' so I'm assuming it's not actual leather, but you honestly can't tell the difference. My biggest complaint is how cheesy the saying on the tray is (even though I am a dad), but that is well worth putting up with for how nice the tray is.

Not bad, but charger didn't work with my phone
Color: Best Dad-brown
I have several organizing trays on my desk (basic, nothing as nice as this box), and so I thought to reduce the clutter on my desk further by incorporating my QI charger with an organizer tray. Unfortunately the QI charger in the organizer wouldn't link up to the QI charging coils of my phone. Whereas the organizer's charger did work with my wife's S24 Ultra, and my phone has been working on a separate QI charger. The whole point in spending this much money on this organizer is for the QI charger. Without the charger working it's just too expensive as an organizer. Yes, it has a leather look to it, but even with that finish I'd say $25 max would be all I'd be willing to pay for such an organizer. So this a cautionary point. If you give this as a gift it may not work with the recipients phone.

Effective & Attractive with Wireless Charging
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
This "valet" organizer, which is the first time I've heard that term for a product like this, is nearly perfect. For me, it checks all of the boxes and in a perfect world, I would have opted for a smaller piece with only three compartments for mobile, wallet, and keys. It's well made and quite attractive, especially the blue (favorite color, so I'm biased). The only feature I'm not a fan of is how the removeable, wireless charging pad was implemented, which sits up on a small lip at a slight incline. However, I'm not complaining one bit as the wireless charging is great, and it's a differentiator that determines the value of the piece. I would have preferred the pad be built into the piece, however the angle of it does make it easy to grab opposed to using your finger(s) to pry it up.

Power Adapter Not Included
Color: Brown +Wireless
I'm initially impressed with this valet tray. I purchased two for my husband: one for his nightstand and one for his dresser, as he likes to keep things organized. We liked the idea of the wireless charging capabilities, but were a little disappointed to discover that the power adapter (wall plug) is not included with the tray. The tray includes a charging pad and a cord, but no wall plug. We don't have an extra pair in the house, so we'll have to wait until a pack arrives before we can test out the charging capabilities. That aside, the trays are a handsome set. I think 20% larger might serve us a tad better, but this will do very nicely for now. We're able to fit almost everything we need in the tray and that will leave the tables looking much tidier, even if one or two items don't quite make it in.
