Найвідоміша книга Ернста Юнґера В сталевих грозах ('In Stahlge-wittern'), яка має підзаголовок Зі щоденника командира ударної групи, була вперше опублікована 1920 р. коштом автора й упродовж кількох років стала бестселером. Це, можливо, найдокладніша, найправдивіша, найважливіша книга про Першу світову війну. Форма щоденника виявилася при цьому адекватним засобом передачі фронтових вражень: регулярні й точні, хоча й фрагментарні нотатки утворюють врешті-решт багатоманітну й вражаючу воєнну мозаїку, яка не могла б бути переконливішою. 

Книга Юнґера В сталевих грозах передує найзнаменитішому німецькому антивоєнному творові, романові Еріха Марії Ремарка На Західному фронті без змін (1928/29). Для його автора ця книга була взірцем, і в опублікованій 1928 року статті він хвалив її за те, що вона показувала воєнний досвід 'без усякого пафосу' і з 'належною об’єктивністю': 'точно, серйозно, сильно й з наростаючою напругою, аж поки в ній і справді не знайшло свого вираження суворе обличчя війни, жахіття матеріальної битви й незмірна, всепоглинаюча сила віталізму серця'. Сьогодні Ремарк сформулював би це, очевидно, інакше; але те, що він тоді висловив, лишається незмінним і сьогодні: проникливе й нещадне, водночас сповнене страждань і фривольне, так само шокуюче, як і вражаюче зображення війни слід визнати письменницьким досягненням і документацією епохальної диспозиції та досвіду, навіть якщо до війни ставитися з відразою.
