Seated portrait of one of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's Bedouin retainers in Al Ain. The man, a tribesman of the Rashid Bedouin, kneels in the sand. He has a pair of black socks slung over his shoulder and a camel stick in his hand. These knitted socks are worn in the sands during the winter and the summer in order to insulate the feet against very cold or very hot sand. The man wears a thobe (long shirt) and a headscarf (ghutra), and has a khanjar (dagger) tucked into his belt. Behind the man is a flat plain of rocky sand, almost bare of vegetation. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
