By: Rachel Hall-CliffordAn unsettling exploration of the hidden power dynamics of global health, seen through the lens of childhood diarrhea and its treatment within the Guatemalan context.
Deaths from childhood diarrhea seem preposterous in high-income countries. Yet, for children under five years old in the rest of the world, diarrhea is the third highest cause of mortality. Despite a glut of prevention and treatment programming spanning more than forty years, this least glamorous of global health ills remains a critical problem. In Underbelly, Rachel Hall-Clifford takes a hard look at the pathways of global health funding and development policies and the outcomes they deliver for recipient individuals and communities. Drawing on fifteen years of ethnographic research in highland Guatemala, Hall-Clifford focuses on the provision of primary health care services as a critical exemplar of how global health and development programs fall short.
Guatemala has a fragmented health system, the author explains, that guarantees health as a human right but also suffers from systemic racism, inadequate health services and access to those services, community distrust from a legacy of harm and violence, and a demeaning paternalism. Bringing together the discourses of global health and medical anthropology, Underbelly explores the ways in which global health—its actors, structures, and systems—perpetuates the challenges it purports to fix: this is the underbelly. Hall-Clifford argues that global health programs, conceived in offices distant from the places in which they are delivered, often have unintended consequences and contribute to pluralistic and exclusionary health systems that mirror neoliberal economies. She argues that if we are to fix this entrenched crisis of health inequity, we must use the immense resources of global health to center local communities as drivers of change.
With a foreword written by Waleska López Canu, an Indigenous Maya medical director, and an afterword by Arthur Kleinman, renowned expert in global health, this book underscores the importance of looking deeper into what seems on its surface incontrovertibly “good” to understand the more complex realities on the ground and in people’s lives.

Great Knee Support
Color: Blue
The 1-inch thickness provides exceptional support and cushioning, making it ideal for a variety of exercises beyond just yoga.
The high-density foam used in this mat is a game-changer. It not only cushions my joints but also retains its shape remarkably well.
The carrying strap is a convenient addition, allowing for easy transport wherever I go. Plus, the mat is easy to clean, which is a huge plus after sweaty workout sessions.
While the extra thickness might not suit everyone's preferences, especially if you prefer a thinner mat for certain poses, I find it perfect for my needs. It strikes an excellent balance between comfort and stability, providing the right amount of cushioning without compromising stability during balancing poses.
Overall, the BalanceFrom All Purpose Yoga Mat will become an indispensable part of my fitness routine. Its durability, support, and easy maintenance make it a top choice for anyone seeking a reliable exercise mat for various workouts.

Perfect For My Routine
Color: Black
I am retired military, so exercise has always been a part of my daily routine. Since the pandemic I have had to adjust, which is hard because the gym has the equipment I have become accustomed to. I didn’t realize how different it was working out there as when I started to work out at home on my hard wood floors (no carpet anywhere). I thought it would be easy but the military exercise mat is entirely too thin and was making my tailbone hurt tremendously, so I had to give up my sit-ups and some other ab exercises. This kind of threw a wrench into my routine and I could start feeling my motivation go away. I decided to take a look on Amazon for a thicker mat. I should have done this long ago because I found this one I’m writing about. It’s the shape of any typical exercise Matt except it’s 1” thick. It appears to be made of a type of foam (not bothering to look at the description right now). When I pulled it out I thought I was going to sink in making sit-ups even harder but it’s firm but not hard. I like it better than what is at the gym. Durability will be hard to determine until I’ve had it a while but I’m definitely excited to start back up on my exercises.
I recommend this mat if you have hard wood floors, bad back, bad knees, etc.
I thought I read some negative reviews about mats this thick because of yoga and balance but I beg to differ. If balancing is part of your exercise routine, then a mat which makes balance harder is exactly what you want. Exercise is supposed to be challenging and you need to work harder to see a difference. If that isn’t your goal or if balance is a medical issue, this may not be the right mat for you. Something you may not think about is I have chronic foot pain and this mat makes it less painful for me to stand or jump.
For me, this mat is perfect.

Extra Cushioning for Comfort
Color: Red
This mat is thick and cushy - even with meniscus tears in both knees I can comfortably exercise. And I love the color.

Nice, thick & comfy but came w/ punctures in foam; seller provided discount
Color: Purple, Color: Purple
I love the mat. It's thick and very comfortable on my knees. However, when I opened it for the first time at my yoga class, there were several cuts or punctures in the foam. I attempted to return it and the seller offered me a 10% refund due to the damage. I am concerned that the mat may deteriorate due to the damage it came with, but I need it and have no idea if the cuts will matter over time. So I accepted the $3 refund and am keeping the mat.

I love this mat. I wish they had it in larger sizes. The only one I have truly non slip. Extremely comfortable especially on my back. Great price.
