artist biography
Ivar Bernhard Vallentin Gustafsson, born September 3, 1890 in Karlskrona was a Swedish painter.
After high school, Gustafsson trained as a professional house painter and completed the social studies degree in 1910. He began his fine art studies at Althins målarskola in Stockholm from 1916 to 1917 and was an aspirant at the Konsthögskolan (School of the Arts) from 1917to 1918 where in the autumn of 1918 he was enrolled as a student. Due to a serious illness, he was forced to interrupt his studies at school after a short time. In 1922 he traveled on a study trip to southern Germany which came to shape his continued artist career. He returned there for further studies in 1936 and then also took the opportunity to study art later in Denmark for period of study between 1949 and 1950. Gustafsson exhibited regularly as a painter. Initially he participated in a number of group exhibitions before making his debut with a solo exhibition in Karlskrona in 1924.
Among his public works are murals in Karlskrona Yrrkesskola (vocational school) and the Telegrafverks building in Karlskrona. His art consists of still lifes, landscape from the Blekinge archipelago, Skåne and Denmark, in oil and cityscapes from Karlskrona and Lund, in watercolour. As a portrait artist he has painted portraits of, among others, Ragnar Jändel and Knut Lundmark.
Gustafsson is represented two public collections in Sweden - at the Västerås Art Museum and Karlskrona Museum.
Gustafsson passed away on January 24, 1977 in Torhamn , Blekinge aged 86.
