The Electro-Voice RE50 is the industry-standard choice for live interviews, broadcast reporting, and on-camera voice capture. Designed to deliver smooth, intelligible sound in challenging environments, this wired dynamic microphone combines rugged performance with a camera-friendly, non-reflective matte finish. Built around a dynamic omni-directional capsule, the RE50 respects the talent’s voice from any angle while minimizing room ambience, wind, and handling noise. The result is studio-grade clarity in field conditions, making it a trusted workhorse for journalists, documentary crews, event hosts, and videographers who require reliability, consistency, and ease of use in one compact package.

What truly sets the RE50 apart is its thoughtful, purpose-built design. The “mic-within-a-mic” concept uses engineering to reduce wind and P-popping noise without relying solely on external filters or heavy processing. This means faster setup, cleaner sound on the first take, and less post-production fiddling. The microphone’s EV DynaDamp shock mount further protects the capsule from mechanical vibrations and handling noise, ensuring a smooth, audition-ready vocal signal even when the mic is hand-held or clipped to a stand in a busy environment. The matte-black finish minimizes reflections on camera, helping you stay visually discreet while you focus on natural vocal delivery. Whether you’re conducting a street interview, reporting from a crowded event, or capturing a studio-style voiceover on location, the RE50 delivers dependable sound with minimal fuss.

Engineered for everyday use in the real world, the RE50’s dynamic omni-directional capsule handles proximity and distance with ease. Its broad pickup pattern makes it forgiving for interview setups where distance between interviewer and subject can vary, and it maintains intelligibility even when multiple voices enter the mic from different angles. The mic also pairs well with standard broadcast gear and recording devices, offering a straightforward workflow that lets creators concentrate on content rather than technical tinkering. In addition to its sonic performance, the RE50 is built to endure long shoots, travel, and outdoor shoots—backed by Electro-Voice’s reputation for durability and professional-grade components. The result is a microphone that sounds consistently premium, season after season, in a form factor that slides into your kit with minimal weight and bulk.

For professionals who demand a blend of broadcast-grade audio and practical on-set ergonomics, the RE50 is an excellent investment. It excels in noisy environments where clarity and presence are essential, yet it remains musical and natural-sounding across voice types. Its compatibility with a wide range of preamps, mixers, and cameras makes it a versatile backbone for any interview setup—whether you’re outfitting a mobile newsroom, building a compact podcast rig, or equipping a documentary crew chasing authentic conversations in the field. When you need a microphone that is as dependable as it is easy to use, the Electro-Voice RE50 stands out as a reliable, high-fidelity choice that meets the demanding expectations of professional media production.

  • Wind and plosive noise reduction with mic-within-a-mic design. The RE50 minimizes wind gusts and P-popping artifacts at close ranges, delivering cleaner vocal capture right out of the box. This makes on-location interviews more forgiving and reduces the need for bulky external windscreens, so your setup stays lean and fast while still preserving natural vocal detail.
  • EV DynaDamp shock mount for ultra-low handling noise. The internal damping system isolates the capsule from movement and vibration, letting interview audio stay crisp and intimate even when the mic is handheld, clipped, or bumped during a busy shoot. This feature is particularly valuable in fast-paced environments where hardware contact is common.
  • Dynamic omni-directional capsule for versatile pickup. The omni capsule captures vocal signals evenly from all directions, delivering a balanced, intelligible voice with a natural presence. This makes the RE50 well suited for scenarios where the talker may shift position or angle relative to the mic, providing consistent sound without constant repositioning.
  • Camera-friendly matte-black finish for discreet on-camera use. The non-reflective surface reduces glare under lighting and helps the microphone stay visually unobtrusive in front of the lens, which is essential for professional video work and documentary shoots where image quality matters as much as audio.
  • Reliable signal integrity with low latency and compatibility. The wired, passive design delivers a clean, low-noise signal path to standard preamps, mixers, or camera audio inputs. Its robust build supports long cable runs and busy production schedules, ensuring dependable performance without delay or degradation in voice quality.

Technical Details of Electro-Voice RE50

  • Type: Dynamic microphone with omni-directional capsule.
  • Finish: Matte black, camera-friendly surface for reduced glare.
  • Polar pattern: Omni-directional dynamic pickup.

How to install Electro-Voice RE50

  • Attach the RE50 to a standard microphone stand or boom using a compatible clip or mount. Ensure the stand is stable and positioned at a height that aligns with the speaker’s mouth for optimal pickup.
  • Connect the microphone’s XLR output to your recording device, mixer, or camera audio input using a balanced XLR cable. Avoid coiled cables that may introduce noise, and route the cable to minimize tension and movement near the mic.
  • Power is not required for this dynamic microphone. If your equipment uses phantom power for other channels, you may leave phantom power off for the RE50 or engage it as needed; the RE50 does not require external power to operate.
  • Set your preamp gain to an initial, conservative level and perform a quick test with the speaker at typical interview proximity. Increase gain gradually until the voice sits clearly in the mix without distortion, then fine-tune with the input level on your device.
  • During use, position the microphone about 6–12 inches from the speaker’s mouth (adjust as needed for plosive management and ambient noise). If wind is a concern, you can opt to use a lightweight windscreen; the mic-within-a-mic design already helps minimize wind noise in most on-location scenarios.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What is the primary use case for the Electro-Voice RE50?

A: The RE50 excels in live interviews, on-camera reporting, and field documentary work where clear, natural voice capture is essential. Its omni-directional capsule and wind-plosive suppression make it suitable for dynamic talk-capture in environments with variable audience and background noise.

  • Q: Does the RE50 require phantom power?

A: No. As a dynamic microphone, the RE50 does not require external phantom power to operate. It connects to standard mic preamps, mixers, or cameras via XLR and relies on the device’s own preamp for gain.

  • Q: Can the RE50 be used with a camera?

A: Yes. The RE50 is well-suited for on-camera work when paired with a compatible audio input. Its matte finish reduces reflections, contributing to cleaner video footage alongside its solid audio performance.

  • Q: How does the wind and plosive reduction work?

A: The mic-within-a-mic approach, combined with the interior design and the built-in wind rejection characteristics, helps minimize wind noise and plosive effects at standard interview distances, reducing the need for heavy external wind protection in many settings.

  • Q: What accessories or mounting options are recommended?

A: Use a standard mic clip for stand mounting, and consider a lightweight windscreen for outdoors. Ensure your cable management avoids strain on the XLR connector and keeps the mic in a stable, ergonomic position for the interview subject.

Good racks, 2 slides instead of 1, smooth action
Size: 7.1" - 2 Drawers (3.3" each drawer), Color: Black, Size: 7.1" - 2 Drawers (3.3" each drawer), Color: Black
Pros: 2 sliders instead of just one, smooth action on the slides, slides ‘lock’ into place when retracted Cons: none for me, other than no option for a single drawer in this size Needed a wide 2-tier rack to go along with other racks I bought at the same time. I chose this one primarily because: - it has 2 sliders, instead of a single one in the middle. - it’s shorter than others I looked at and I needed to fit some taller items. - there’s only screws attaching the sliders to the base, which I was going to remove to reduce height. I really only needed a single 2-tier rack in this size, but it was only offered as a double. Fortunately, the sliders were only affixed to the base with screws and not rivets, so dismantling a single drawer was easy and didn’t require doing any damage. If you happen to need to do the same, but still have to use the base to clear a lip at the bottom of the cabinet, the metal of the base should be easy to cut in half if you have or have access to the power tools to do so. If you don’t, you could still dismantle 1 rack and just create a new base with some thin wood, then screw both directly to the cabinet. No complaints, would buy again if it were offered in a single-drawer configuration. Having 2 slides was still definitely a big plus, nonetheless, but I now have half a unit that I don’t necessarily need. I would note that the sliders don't extend quite as far out as I thought they may, but it's really only ≤1" that I'm talking about and they still extend far enough to vertically pull the rear-most item out, so it's not a biggie, just worth noting. * I didn’t use the adhesive strip and just threw it away, as I intended to secure it with screws from the beginning. If you’ll be using the base, I’d suggest drilling holes through the base and securing it to the cabinet with screws. The adhesive could well be fine, but it’s asking for trouble to have this loaded with glass and have the adhesive give out. No doubt it would happen when you have 3 things on the stove, the phone is ringing and it was the also week you kinked your back something awful, right? (Item reviewed: 2 drawer x 3.3")

Nice units
Size: 7.4" - 3 Drawers (2.2" each drawer), Color: Black
Nice way to organize and utilize spices and seasonings. Slides out well. You will have to watch sizes of bottles. Units won't handle taller and wider bottles.

Sturdy and attractive
Size: 7.4" - 3 Drawers (2.2" each drawer), Color: Black
Very sturdy. Fit my cabinet perfectly. Would love a version that is just one level too. No assembly required. Solid enough that it stays in place without adhesive. Can finally find spices without taking them all out of the cabinet.
