Architect John Parkinson died in 1935, and the Los Angeles Times praised him: “Future generations have only to walk through the streets of Los Angeles to be reminded how much John Parkinson in his lifetime contributed to the city that grew up under his hand.” In Iconic Vision: John Parkinson, Architect of Los Angeles, author Stephen Gee proves that this singular visionary created the look of America’s most dynamic metropolis, long before the world recognized the city’s importance. Consider that among more than four hundred buildings in the City of Angels that carried his architectural imprimatur, John Parkinson designed:

  • Los Angeles City Hall, the most iconic building in California, the tower that changed a futuristic city’s skyline forever.
  • Bullock’s Wilshire, the towering structure that rivals the Chrysler Building as America’s premier Art Deco edifice.
  • Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the world’s only modern stadium to host two Olympic Games, 1932 and 1984—and still home to the USC Trojans.
  • Los Angeles Union Station, the Mission-Moderne-Art Deco masterpiece that brought together California’s railroads and became a legend before the first trains roared in.

Los Angeles was a small town plunked amid wide-open spaces when John Parkinson arrived in 1894. Before the century turned, he was already shaping the identity of the fledgling town through architectural innovation. Like the importance of the city he loved, Parkinson’s impact shot skyward: he conceived the first skyscraper in Los Angeles and introduced its first steel-frame structures.

And yet, does anyone really know his name? No libraries hold books devoted to his work. No classes are devoted to his designs in architecture schools. It is almost impossible to believe, but no author has significantly presented a study of John Parkinson. Until now.

Stephen Gee is a senior producer for ITV Studios, based in Los Angeles. He has worked on numerous award-winning television productions and has directed and produced live coverage of high-profile news stories, including four U.S. presidential elections, important court cases, Hollywood events, as well as disasters—including the 9/11 tragedy. Experienced in various important aspects of television production, Gee was the lead cameraman and producer for a series of documentaries for National Geographic. A graduate of London’s City University, Gee began his career as a newspaper reporter in Norfolk, England. He has lived in Los Angeles since 1995. Iconic Vision is his first book.

Smaller than expected
Size: 0.5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50 Stick
Works well and easy to use but is very small. I thought it was the size of a short deodorant stick but it’s way smaller. It is a good size if you just want to stick in your purse or bag but for the price I thought I was getting more.

Excellent product
Size: 0.5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50 Stick
I carried this sunscreen around in my bag all day at an amusement park on a very hot day and it was very useful. It didn’t melt or soften up in my bag and was easy to use, kind of like deodorant where you turn the little wheel on the bottom to make it come up. I had applied a different sunscreen on before entering the park (also spf 50) and used this for touch ups throughout the day and it was enough for two adults and a child and we still had plenty left for another day. It applies very white and in visible streaks, so we just rubbed it in and had no issue. I always get a weird farmers tan after being in the sun the way I was and barely had any visible tanning this time. This is going to be a new essential for me for amusement parks.

Very noticeable white cast that almost looks like too light makeup
Size: 0.5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50 Stick
I like that this sunscreen stick is compact, easy to toss in a bag, and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. It glides on smoothly and feels less greasy than some mineral sunscreens I’ve tried. The SPF 50 protection also makes it convenient for quick touch-ups throughout the day, especially on the face and ears. The biggest downside for me is the noticeable white cast. While it’s easy to apply and feels gentle on sensitive skin, the white cast is very noticeable and hard to blend out. It left my face looking pale and chalky for hours, which made me self-conscious wearing it in public. I understand mineral sunscreens can leave some residue, but this one was much more visible than expected. It may work better for very fair skin tones or outdoor activities where appearance matters less, but I wouldn’t repurchase it for everyday use.

This is all I use and I hate putting stuff on my skin.
Size: 0.5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50 Stick
Perfect, I have one in pocket for reapplying as needed especially when my hands are disgusting. Just like the directions say it is also excellent for lips, nose and ears. You can massage it in if you mind the white cast. I like the white cast because that is what is protecting my skin from further damage. I found that when used as directed combined with the CETAPHIL Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Lotion it also protects my sensitive and extremely sun damaged skin from wind burn. Since I put it on thick it prevents the biting insects from getting to my skin. I only use on my face because I cover everything else with protective clothing. Rather have a white cast than permanent sun damage. It doesn't burn my skin like many other brands I've tried.

Easy application, moisturizing
Size: 0.5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50 Stick
I love this product. It's so quick and easy to use! My face tends to get dry throughout the day but this is amazing for it! It only leaves a white cast if i put a lot on (usually if i go out for a run/hike). Other than that, i rub it in really well and my face feels moisturized and looks glowy. I highly recommend. It is very small but i only use it on my face so it has lasted me a while.
