.Rival was formed in the hot Chicago summer of 1990 by founding drummer Gary Olson, bassist/vocalist John Johnson, and guitarists Neven Trivic and Chuck McNulty. Having been in previous cover bands with each other before at some point, this union was a mixture of just the right chemistry. They entered a recording studio with limited funds, and emerged with a self-titled 5 song EP in 1991 consisting of all original material. Soon to follow was an invitation to perform at the "Headbangers Open Air" and "Bang Your Head" festivals in the summer of 2002. Because of the success of their two disks as well as their festival performances, Rival landed their very first record deal with Metal Blade. So with new material, Rival entered the studio late fall of 2003 to record the "State Of Mind" CD with a renewed sense of intensity. The result, 9 hard hitting, aggressive songs were created

One of the most original and moving books of poems I've ever read
Format: Paperback
Ilya Kaminsky is practically a legend, at this point, and deservedly so. This is his second book of poems, and proves well worth the wait. The individual poems are beautiful and strange; together, they comprise a kind of allegory for our times, and manage to be both somehow light-of-heart, somehow luminous, and also seriously profound. I would recommend this book even to those who don't usually read poetry, because it's beyond poetry, truly.

Beautifully written and good quality book

I received the book earlier than the estimated date. I love this poem collection of Ilya Kaminsky. Although it describes the social unrest in an unknown place (and unfamiliar to me), his poems are beautifully written with strong images and music.
THe paper quality and the book are so new and lovely. I couldn't think that it is used (as it stated).

Life: A challenge in many ways in all cultures

I heard Ilya Kaminsky read his poems at Chautauqua this past summer. Over powering and dynamic to hear his voice speak his words... about his life experiences need to be remembered.
A must read and if possible with the audio.

A brilliant poetic narrative whose lines leap off the pages which turn themselves.
Format: Paperback
When you get to the end, you wonder how Kaminsky worked his wondrous magic, how it's possible to think and write poetry like that. The poem is a story about Vasenka, a mythical town somewhere in the Ukraine, occupied by the Soviet army during an unspecified period of time. It is an allegory of the cruelty of occupation, the futility of the resistance of a few, and the deafness of the silent majority, a deafness that courageously resists the occupation and a deafness that hardens the heart and ignores the evil surrounding them. It could have happened anywhere anytime. The occupiers could have been Nazis, Ottoman Turks, American, English, or Spanish. The poetry is piercingly sharp, visionary, breathless and the metaphors are the likes of which you've never heard before, lines like “the sound we do not hear lifts the gulls off the water,” “Our hearing doesn't weaken, but something silent in us strengthens,” or “In these avenues, deafness is our only barricade.” This is drop-dead beautiful poetry.
