Seiko Grand Quartz from August 1978, featuring the beautiful diamond dust dial and an HSS (Hardened Stainless Steel) case. Inside is the 9943 Twin Quartz movement, one of Seiko’s most impressive quartz calibers from the late 1970s. Introduced earlier that same year, it succeeded the 4843 found in the first Grand Quartz models and carried an accuracy rating of ±10 seconds per year, an extraordinary figure for its time.
This is one of those watches that immediately stands out once you have it in hand. The case remains unpolished with sharp edges and only light signs of wear, while the snowflake dial has stayed beautifully preserved. The sapphire crystal is free from scratches. It comes fitted on an original Seiko bracelet from the same era. Although not the bracelet originally supplied with this reference, it looks completely at home on the watch and matches the case and finishing very well. Quickset for the day and date is working as it should and the day can displayed in Japanese Kanji and English.
The watch was fully serviced by a professional watchmaker in May 2026. It was completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled, and has since been checked for proper operation and stable timekeeping. A fantastic example of a high-end Grand Quartz that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in this kind of original condition.
Details
The Seiko 9943 is a high-grade Twin Quartz movement introduced in 1978 as part of the Grand Quartz series. Unlike conventional quartz calibers, it uses two quartz crystals operating at different frequencies to improve temperature compensation and long-term accuracy. The movement was factory rated to ±10 seconds per year, placing it among the most accurate wristwatch movements of its era.
Caliber 9943 features a quickset day and date function, hacking seconds, and a finely finished construction typical of Seiko's premium quartz models from the late 1970s. Produced for only a relatively short period, the 9943 remains one of the most technically advanced vintage quartz movements.
The quartz crisis
The quartz crisis was a major turning point in the watch industry during the 1970s and 1980s, driven by the rise of quartz technology. Companies like Seiko led the way, offering watches that were more accurate, more affordable, and easier to maintain than traditional mechanical models.
With the launch of the first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, in 1969, Seiko showed the world what quartz could achieve. Swiss watchmakers, known for their mechanical craftsmanship, were slow to react and lost much of their market share. The crisis forced the Swiss industry to restructure and helped shape a future where traditional watchmaking and modern quartz innovation could exist side by side.
