Background
Olfactory Marker Protein (OMP) is a small, cytoplasmic protein highly and selectively expressed in mature olfactory sensory neurons of most vertebrates. First identified in 1975, it serves as a canonical marker for fully differentiated, functional olfactory neurons. Although not directly involved in odorant binding or signal initiation, OMP plays a crucial modulatory role in olfactory signal transduction. It accelerates signal kinetics and contributes to the precise temporal patterning of neuronal responses. Knockout studies demonstrate that its absence leads to attenuated electrical signals and impairments in odor discrimination. Thus, OMP is essential for the high sensitivity and rapid signaling characteristic of the mammalian olfactory system.
