On creating this subtle yet meticulously detailed wall sculpture, artist Nic Joly pondered: "Well where do I start…?  I start with a whole load of real white duck eggs".

After bleaching, cleaning, blowing, and drying the egg over two weeks, Nic applies intricate letters hand-cut from delicate transfer paper to create his handmade artwork. This requires the utmost patience and precision because even after he has added these, the egg must dry for a further two weeks before being painted and broken; forming a totally unique and natural artwork. Offset by his own hand-made figures and miniature structures made from thin, laser-cut wood and bronze casts, the entire exquisite composition is finally mounted on a marble and resin Corian base, ready for display. However, the most beautiful aspect of this artwork is arguably the message behind it. 

The artist noted that while the pandemic was undoubtedly a hard time for us all, he wants to remind us of the beauty that has emerged. 

"I have been given time to embrace the fact that I am not as invincible as I thought. There have been days when I’ve really struggled, and I still do but, I am fragile as are we all. I spoke to friends and family and we all talked in a way we never had done before about how hard we were finding some days; we were sharing our own fragility and weaknesses. People have really started to talk about their mental health and the stigma attached with mental issues is finally fading. We are all fragile and now it is time to embrace that fact and talk honestly about it." - Nic Joly
