If you want to know what the most obscure, most personal, deepest cut in my entire catalogue is, it's probably this track, 'The Trainer Shuffle; by Blue States. Blue States is an amazing one-man chill-out downtempo 'band' that found some minor success in the early oughts; one of his/their tracks made it onto the 2002 film 28 Days Later which raised its profile somewhat. This is my favourite track by Blue States, an instrumental with a deeply melancholy, keening tone of grief to it, offset by a bluesy rhythm section. It has a pleasantly weird sample, four words which end with "Film; Music; Radio" but which for the dear life of me, I can't figure out the first one (if you know, please email me through the shop here and tell me).
In British vernacular, 'trainers' are running shoes aka sneakers, which makes sense with 'shuffle', but given the polyphonic complexity of the music, I wanted something multilayered -- after over a year of searching, I finally discovered this wonderful vintage retro pulp paperback cover which not only shows 'trainers', but also features a trainer, and the three of them suggest a shuffling of power and money. I love it.
