A vinyl issue of The Prophet Hens debut album, Popular People Do Popular People, originally released on CD in 2013. Hatched from Dunedin's dreamy but dark 21st century pop underground, The Prophet Hens bring a ghostly reminder of the decaying southern city's musical past, when bands crafted melodic, chiming jangle-pop in seedy bars. The band, and the songs on the album, started when songwriter and guitarist Karl Bray was laid up at home recovering from major surgery to repair an ankle he'd smashed up while escaping a night-time mugging in downtown Dunedin. He jumped over a wall to get away, and, in the darkness, fell twelve feet. The album was recorded with Penelope Esplin (keyboards & vocals), John White (of Mestar, The Blueness, on bass) and Sefton Holmes (Black Yoghurt, on drums). The current line-up of the band sees Karl and Penelope joined by Robin Cederman on bass and Darren Stedman (The Verlaines) on drums. The Prophet Hens music is marinated in the melodic sounds of that mostly fictional "Dunedin Sound" - think The Chills, The Bats, Magick Heads plus a little bit of The Clean and The Orange. But the combination of Karl's and Penelope's voices adds extra magic. US music blog The Finest Kiss, after making it their #2 album of 2013, described their popular debut: "New Zealand's Prophet Hens sort of came out of nowhere and swept me off of my feet with their Chills meets Belle and Sebastian pop alchemy. Both of those bands are highly regarded and the Prophet Hens may be better than both. Granted they haven't written a Pink Frost yet, but many of the songs here are nearly as memorable and lead me to believe that they just might have something of the Pink Frost caliber in them." More praise from Did Not Chart (UK): "Perfectly encapsulates the big bold ambition of Dunedin music with the quiet drama of isolation on a South Pacific island: part Chills organ-drenched pop, part bedroom angst".

Lightweight Performance Polo That Fits Better Than Expected
Color: White, Size: Small
This is a thin synthetic material performance polo, but in a good way for summer use. The material is lightweight, breathable, and dries quickly, which makes it comfortable in heat without feeling heavy or clingy. What surprised me most was the fit. A lot of synthetic polos tend to just sort of hang off the body in an unflattering way, especially thinner ones, but this one actually fits fairly well and keeps a cleaner shape instead of looking draped or sloppy. I got the white version and the color is genuinely bright and clean looking rather than dull or slightly gray like some cheaper white shirts can be. I would still recommend wearing an undershirt underneath, partly because the material is thinner and also because it helps the shirt sit and look a bit nicer overall. So far the quality seems good, stitching and finish look solid, though the real test will be how it holds up after repeated washes and heavy summer wear. Based on first impressions though, this feels like a shirt I will probably end up wearing quite a bit over the next few months.

Older than some
Color: Khaki, Size: Large
Nice for price. Wrinkles after cold water wash and dryer. Needs a touch of iron. Thin fabric good for hot days. Like color and construction.

Soft and comfortable
Color: Burgundy, Size: Large, Color: Burgundy, Size: Large
This shirt surprised me by how comfortable it is. I usually try to get cotton shirts, or shirts that at least have a little cotton in them, but this shirt is 100% synthetic. Despite that it is very soft on the skin and seems to breathe well. In polo shirts I’m usually between a medium and a large, but if I’m not able to try it on, I will usually go to the large. I did in this case, and I probably could have used the medium. But a little extra fabric isn’t really a problem with this kind of shirt, and I feel it just gives more room to breathe. There were no loose threads and the seams are even. The burgundy color is rich, and the collar has a unique pattern that received mixed reviews from my panel of family members, but that comes down to a matter of taste, and I like it. With this quality, I expect it to last through many wearings and washings.

Comfortable & Cool Golf Polo - Perfect for Hot Florida Days
Color: Navy, Size: Large
This shirt is made with a soft pique fabric that feels comfortable against the skin. The moisture-wicking and quick-dry material keeps you cool and dry, which works especially well in the hot Florida heat. It has nice 4-way stretch for good mobility, a stylish plaid collar with three buttons, and ribbed cuffs for a clean look. The shirt stays relatively wrinkle-free and is versatile enough for golf, casual office wear, or everyday use. Overall, a solid, comfortable polo that performs well in warm weather.
