John Cowie of Taranaki saw potential where others didnt and began making a plastic version of the jandal in the 1940s. Unfortunately, Cowies innovative spirit didnt translate into the savviest of business chops the trademark and patent later being secured by a slippery entrepreneur from Auckland who introduced a rubber version of the flip flop.
