作者
傑佛瑞．羅森薩爾（Jeffrey S. Rosenthal）
哈佛大學數學博士，多倫多大學統計系教授。他很小就對機率理論感興趣，小時候，他很喜歡擲硬幣、丟骰子並計算機率。
他的研究與教學屢獲殊榮，更受到學生愛戴，贏得兩項教學獎：1991年的哈佛大學教學獎（Harvard University Teaching Award），以及1998年多倫多大學藝術科學傑出教學獎（Arts and Science Outstanding Teaching Award）。
羅森薩爾教授於2005年榮獲「國際數理統計學會會士」（IMS Fellow），並於2006年獲得數學研究中心與加拿大統計學會（CRM－SSC）大獎，更於2007年榮獲COPSS獎，該獎項被譽為統計學界的諾貝爾獎，為國際統計學界最高榮譽。2012年獲頒加拿大皇家學會院士，為加拿大最高學術榮譽。2013年，獲頒加拿大統計學會金獎（Statistical Society of Canada Gold Medal）。

Finally made Homer click for me

I’ve tried reading The Iliad and The Odyssey before but always got lost in the language. This translation is clear and smooth while keeping the epic feel of the stories. It helped me actually enjoy the characters and battles without feeling like I was stuck in a high school assignment. It’s made these classics feel alive and human, and I’m glad I gave it another try with this version.

Epic tales that still resonate

I dove into Dawson’s twin translation of The Iliad and The Odyssey hoping for clarity—and instead found myself struck by their emotional pull. Achilles’ fury, Hector’s honor, Odysseus’ longing for home—it all felt immediate and real. Dawson’s language flows so naturally, I forgot I was reading an ancient text. There were moments I stopped and sighed, moved by how these characters still speak to our hearts today.

A good weekend read

Timeless adventure, beautifully retold

Feels like sitting around a fire

I didn’t think I’d ever get through these stories, but this translation made it feel like someone was telling them to me, not lecturing. The battles in The Iliad felt sharp and real, and the long journey in The Odyssey pulled me in without getting lost in heavy words. I finished both feeling like I finally understood why these stories mattered, and they left me thinking about courage, anger, and coming home in a new way.
