Transition Networks ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module

The Transition Networks ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module is a high-performance bridge between copper and fiber networks, designed to help you extend your Ethernet backbone without ripping out existing copper infrastructure. Known as the ION C3210, this module sits inside an ION chassis, delivering a seamless interface between 10/100/1000Base-T copper ports and 1000Base-SX/LX fiber ports. By combining media conversion with rate conversion at Layer 2, it enables transparent, efficient communication across disparate network segments, letting you leverage fiber optics for longer reach, higher bandwidth, and improved network resilience while preserving your current copper devices.

  • Seamless copper-to-fiber bridging: Connect 10/100/1000Base-T copper devices to 1000Base-SX/LX fiber links. The module performs both media conversion and rate conversion so that devices on copper can communicate with fiber-only segments without reconfiguring end devices.
  • Layer 2 efficiency and compatibility: Operates at Layer 2 to forward frames using standard Ethernet bridging concepts, ensuring compatibility with typical LAN architectures and minimizing protocol overhead or compatibility issues during the transition to fiber.
  • Plug-and-play for Transition Networks ION platforms: Designed as a modular ION blade, this converter slots into supported Transition Networks ION chassis for quick deployment and easy maintenance, with hot-swap capabilities in compatible systems to reduce downtime.
  • Flexible fiber support (SX/LX): Supports 1000Base-SX for multimode fiber and 1000Base-LX for single-mode fiber, giving you options to match campus, data-center, or building backbone requirements without changing the copper side.
  • Reliability for demanding environments: Built to integrate smoothly into enterprise networks, with conservative power, thermal, and signal integrity considerations designed to preserve performance under typical data-center and campus workloads.

Technical Details of Transition Networks ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module

  • Model and platform: ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module, commonly used as the Transition Networks ION C3210 module in compatible ION chassis.
  • Copper interface: 1 x RJ-45 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet port for copper devices.
  • Fiber interface: 1 x 1000Base-SX/LX fiber port for connecting to fiber networks (multimode SX and single-mode LX options supported).
  • Conversion capability: Media conversion from copper to fiber with rate conversion at Layer 2 to enable seamless data forwarding across media types.
  • Data throughput: Supports Gigabit-class performance up to 1 Gbps, enabling efficient transmission of standard Ethernet traffic without bottlenecks on typical enterprise links.
  • Layer 2 operation: Forwarding decisions are made at Layer 2, preserving Ethernet semantics and compatibility with existing switches, routers, and NICs on the copper side.
  • Fiber options and distances: SX (multimode) and LX (single-mode) fiber options provide flexibility for campus rings, building backbones, and data-center links; actual reach depends on fiber type, transceiver species, and link budget.
  • Form factor and installation: Designed as a plug-in module for Transition Networks ION chassis, allowing modular scalability within a single chassis and straightforward expansion as needs grow.

How to install Transition Networks ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module

  • Power down the chassis or confirm hot-swap compatibility according to your Transition Networks system guidelines, then locate an available slot in the ION chassis for the C3210 module.
  • Gently insert the module into the slot until it seats firmly, ensuring the connectors align with the backplane and the module is locked in place per chassis instructions.
  • Connect the copper side: attach a standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable from a 10/100/1000Base-T device (switch, NIC, or router) to the module’s copper port.
  • Connect the fiber side: attach a fiber optic cable (SX for multimode or LX for single-mode, as required) to the 1000Base-SX/LX port, making sure the transmit and receive fibers are correctly aligned per your fiber type.
  • Power on the chassis (if powered externally) and verify link indicators on the module and chassis backplane. Confirm that the copper device and fiber link are both active, and test traffic flow to ensure proper conversion and forwarding between media types.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does the Transition Networks ION Gigabit Ethernet Media and Rate Converter Module do? It serves as a bridge between copper Ethernet (10/100/1000Base-T) and fiber Ethernet (1000Base-SX/LX), performing both media conversion and rate conversion at Layer 2 to enable seamless communication across mixed-media networks.
  • Which fiber types does it support? It supports 1000Base-SX for multimode fiber and 1000Base-LX for single-mode fiber, providing flexibility to match campus, data-center, and backbone deployments.
  • Can I hot-swap this module? Yes, when used in a supported Transition Networks ION chassis, the module is designed for plug-and-play installation and safe hot-swapping with appropriate chassis guidelines.
  • What kind of networks is this module best suited for? It is ideal for environments where a fiber backbone must interface with copper-based devices, such as upgrading a campus or data-center core where fiber can replace copper runs without replacing existing copper switches or devices.
  • Do I need to reconfigure devices on the copper side after installation? In most cases, standard Ethernet settings (speed, duplex, and VLAN policies) on connected copper devices remain intact; the module handles media and rate conversion transparently at Layer 2, but refer to your network policy to ensure compatibility with VLANs or bridging configurations if used.
  • What performance can I expect from this module? The module is designed to support Gigabit-class operation, delivering up to 1 Gbps of throughput in typical lane configurations, with forwarding behavior aligned to Layer 2 Ethernet standards for reliable cross-media communication.

Husky chew proof....so far
My husky has a habit of gutting and destroying any squeaky chew toy I have gotten for her. This one so far has lasted a over a month now I must say it does make her work for a treat when hidden in the center of it. So far all the stitching and parts are attached and like new. The plastic center where you hid the treats is intact, the firmness of it does make it difficult to get the treats you put in hard to remove-so choose wisely and not put in large pieces as there is one of the first pieces still inside the center as even I can't get it out. So my girl she enjoys carrying it around and playing with it so this chew toy is a win for this husky owner

DANGER
DO NOT BUY!!! DANGER! We have had the turtle ones before and then got these. Be we bought two. there is a plug peice in the end that popped out. My dog ate it the first time and had to have emergency surgery because it was stuck in his intestines. We had it removed which cost THOUSANDS of dollars. Also was on vacation when it happened and had to come early when the sitter informed us he was ill. We felt guilty for month! had he got something in our house or yard was it our faults. We saved what they removed which looked like a cork but we dont drink wine. we have a frenchie that doesnt enjoys long walks on the beach if you know what i mean so would not have had access to eat something other places he doesnt relaly go anywhere. This was his favorite toy for a long time so when it got dirty outside, we threw away the first one and took out the second one to replace it . One day i was sitting playing fetch with him when i saw the plug peice come out. I caught it and took it out of his mouth. I IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED IT. I ran to grab the zip lock bag the vet gave us with the cork looking item covered in gunk and slime from inside his intestines, ran to the sink to rinse it off and what do you know. mystery was solved. This toy could have killed my dog !

THE favorite toy
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Shark, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Shark
I found this toy used at a thrift store almost 1 year ago. My Shih tzu mix loved it so much till all the seams ripped out and 2 out of 3 squeekers fell out and it was shambles, hardly usable at all. 1 week ago I decided to try my luck to find a similar shark toy for Finnegan. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found THE EXACT same toy!! When I unboxed it, I put the old and new side-by-side and imagine his surprise, it was priceless! Very pleased with this.

Best Dog Toy Ever!
Size: Small (Pack of 1), Style: Monkey, Size: Small (Pack of 1), Style: Monkey
Unbelievable. See below previous reviews. Today is 3/22/2023 (4th Update): Cavachon is now three years old. THIS MONKEY is STILL played with DAILY. She’s played with and lost interest in dozens of other toys in the past three years, but Monkey is always the go-to. Now only on Monkey #6, which is remarkable considering the daily torture she puts Monkey through. Other toys get destroyed, but Monkey endures. This toy is our dog’s best friend and playmate! 10/9/21 (3rd update): Its rare that any toy (without food inside) keeps the interest of our Cavachon for even 30 minutes… yet day after day, she runs around with Monkey for at least an hour. She’s on her 4th Monkey… and this thing gets mauled, chewed, super-squeaked, fetched, and shook violently EVERY DAY. Durability times ten! 2/21/21 (2nd Update): Crazy pup is now 14 months old, and she plays DAILY with “monkey”! She’s on her third monkey because eventually she pulls off the tail, but each of her first two lasted months. ORIGINAL REVIEW MAY 2020: There is something really special about this monkey... Our 5-month-old Cavachon LOVES this toy. I recently ordered a second one, in case she wears out the first one. She knows it’s her “monkey” and finds it when we ask her “Where’s monkey?” She fetches it, walks around squeaking it, and she also zooms around the house shaking it furiously by the tail. She’s been playing with, and chewing on all parts of It, DAILY for three months. In the photo, you can compare the brand-new one, still on the cardboard, with the one she’s mauled for three months. Not much difference. I would say this is an extremely durable, and safe, toy.
