The process of optimization in games seems like a good thing—who wouldn’t want to find the most efficient way to play and win? As Christopher Paul argues in Optimizing Play, however, optimization can sometimes risk a tragedy of the commons, where actions that are good for individuals jeopardize the overall state of the game for everyone else. As he explains, players inadvertently limit play as they theorycraft, seeking optimal choices. The process of developing a meta, or the most effective tactic available, structures decision making, causing play to stagnate. A “stale” meta then creates a perception that a game is solved and may lead players to turn away from the game.
Drawing on insights from game studies, rhetoric, the history of science, ecology, and game theory literature, Paul explores the problem of optimization in a range of video games, including Overwatch, FIFA/EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Clash Royale, World of Warcraft, and League of Legends. He also pulls extensively from data analytics in sports, where the problem has progressed further and is even more intractable than it is in video games, given the money sports teams invest to find an edge. Finally, Paul offers concrete and specific suggestions for how games can be developed to avoid the trap set by optimization run amok.

My dog loves this
Size: Large
This was a great product for a chewer dog.
My Pitt bull chewed this toy for a long time. My only complaint would be in the process of chewing some areas became pointy and cut his gums slightly. It didn’t seem to bother him but the blood on the white toy was disturbing to me.

Sturdy and favorite chew toy
Size: Large
Golden retriever puppy favorite chew toy. All the curves and edges make him so happy he closes his eyes when he chews it. Family dogs come over and always want to steal it from him. Extremely sturdy too. Only downside is I think it is paper waded up on the floor from a distance. Haha.

THE Most Important Toy
Size: Large
My dog refuses to play with toys. She’s a rescue, so I’m not sure what her past has involved, but she doesn’t pay attention to any toys. Except this one. This is her 4th one- I buy a new one when she chews it beyond recognition, and she still loves it. (For time reference- I’ve had her 9 years, so we go through one roughly every 4 years.)
My brother’s late dog also would only play with these. Something about the dinosaur shape- it’s magical!

Not very sturdy.
Size: Large
This was a nice toy but not able to with stand an aggressive chewer. I have a GBGV with super strong jaws.

Best chew toy ever!
Size: Large
My doodles love this chew. My 4 year old doodle still has hers. Very durable. I’ve bought this for all my friends and neighbors with new puppies! I have a new 7 month old doodle- she has not torn up anything...I feel it’s because of this chew.
