Scott Papper is a Graduate Gemologist (GIA), Certified Master Appraiser (NAJA), Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), Registered Gemologist Appraiser (ISG), and Accredited Senior Gemologist (AGA), to name only a handful. Scott is a fourth generation gem and jewelry professional with experience as an independent appraiser, gemologist, jewelry buyer, pawnbroker, and expert witness. In addition to having performed appraisal services for both private clients and those within the trade, he has also been engaged as a subcontractor to assist with the valuation of jewelry and watches that have been confiscated by US government agencies, including the US Secret Service (USSS), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the US Coast Guard (USCG).
ABOUT THE ITEM
The Victorian Era is named after Queen Victoria, whose reign over Great Britain lasted from 1837 'til her death in 1901. After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria went into mourning and began wearing all black, including her jewelry, which popularized the trend of mourning jewelry during The Grand Period, circa 1861-1885.
This gorgeous Mid Victorian Era antique mourning brooch is crafted in 9 karat gold with black enamel accents, and features a reversible centerpiece. One side of the reversible center displays delicately braided hair resting peacefully beneath a polished glass crystal. The opposite side is presently blank, but at one point housed a photo to memorialize a loved one who had passed on.
The brooch has had a bail added, allowing it to be worn as a pendant on a necklace.
Please Note: There is minimal to moderate enamel loss that is visible under magnification, but is extremely difficult to notice with the naked eye. There is some discoloration on the front of the brooch, probably due to a previous repair.
