We took the opportunity to beat the crowds to Fushimi Inari, one of the most breathtaking locations in Kyoto. There are a thousand orange archways or torii gates that climb all the way to the top of a mountain. Each gate symbolizes leaving the mundane behind and entering a more sacred place. It was pouring down rain as we walked through each torii, but I think only added to the mystery of this place.
