We ended up taking care of him and his home for the last four years of his life. His large backyard was home to many fruit trees, especially pear trees. At the time they were always available and ready to eat and great subjects to paint, so I painted a lot of them. Aside from the rich color, shape, and visual interest, I painted them and continue to paint them because they are a strong symbol of our time together during his last years of life.
