How to install Lantronix One Port Serial (RS232/ RS422/ RS485) to IP Ethernet Device Server with PoE

Getting started with this Lantronix device server is straightforward and designed for rapid deployment in both IT rooms and field installations. Follow these general steps to install and configure the unit for immediate use in your networked ecosystem:

1) Determine your deployment site. Choose a location with stable network access and, if possible, a PoE-enabled switch or injector to take advantage of PoE power delivery. A compact enclosure near the serial device helps minimize cable length and signal degradation.

2) Connect the serial device. Use the appropriate serial interface (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) to connect your serial equipment (such as barcode readers, sensors, or terminals) to the device server. For RS-485 multi-drop configurations, ensure correct termination and biasing as required by your network design.

3) Establish network connectivity. Attach the device server’s Ethernet port to a PoE-enabled switch or network outlet. If your network uses DHCP, the device will obtain an IP address automatically; otherwise, prepare a static IP plan and reserve the device’s address in your DHCP server or configure it manually later.

4) Power up and verify power delivery. With PoE, the device server should power on as soon as the Ethernet link is established. Confirm that the PoE power is sufficient for reliable operation and that the unit is not overheating, especially in enclosure or rack installations.

5) Access the web UI and configure serial and network settings. Open a web browser and navigate to the device’s IP address to begin configuration. Set the serial parameters (baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits) to match your serial device’s requirements. Configure the network profile (DHCP or static IP), DNS, and any required security settings or access controls. If needed, adjust advanced options such as keep-alive, timeouts, and protocol mappings to tailor data flow to your application.

6) Save and test. Apply the configuration, save the profile, and perform a live test by sending commands from a client on the network to the serial device, or by polling the serial device from an application. Validate reliability across typical operating windows and verify that data is transmitted with minimal latency and error. If you encounter issues, recheck cable connections, termination settings for RS-485, and IP addressing to ensure there are no conflicts.

7) Integrate with your workflow. Once the device server is configured and verified, integrate it into your existing management framework. This may include updating monitoring dashboards, configuring SNMP traps, or setting up automatic re-connect and retry policies to maintain continuous data availability for critical serial devices.

8) Maintain and update. Periodically check for firmware updates from Lantronix and apply them following your change control procedures. Maintain security best practices by using strong credentials, enabling access controls, and monitoring for unusual activity on the device’s management interfaces.

Air and space
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book for my friend who was scheduled to see the Smithsonian Air and Space museum when he broke his hand. Sadly he wasn’t able to go to the museum but absolutely loved this book I bought him! It has so many things the museum has in it. If you or a friend cannot make it down to DC this is definitely a must buy!!!

Great Annotated Aircraft Encyclopedia
Format: Hardcover
This book was a gift for my husband who is an aircraft fanatic. We live near an airbase, which is now out of commission, but in the past, there was an aircraft museum with information about aircraft, which fascinated my husband. This book was a great surprise for him because it is not just full of pictures, but also includes text about the history, building, and uses of each aircraft.

Great Guide to the National Air & Space Museum
I recently visited the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. It was the first time I'd been there since they moved into their current facility in the mid-1970's. It was breathtaking. The best way to describe the effect of walking in the main entrance is to envision the bedroom of a boy who hangs model airplanes from the ceiling. Only at the NASM, the "models" hanging from the ceiling are full-size. I was a model-building boy in the 1950's, and my favorites were planes I'd built from kits. Unfortunately, the museum was undergoing some of its regular updating and a few of my favorite planes weren't on view, such as the F89 Super Saber. Fortunately, that plane and most (if not all) the permanent collection are profiled in the Best of the National Air and Space Museum. If at all possible, visit the museum. If you can't get there, buy the book. Actually, buy the book in either case. You won't be disappointed.

The Air & Space Museum is a national treasure.
Format: Hardcover
This is one of those books that makes you wish you were there. Lots of pictures and tidbits of information. A good quality book physically as well. We get their magazine and this is one of many books we have both from and about the museum. Highly Recommended.

Great photo essay, history of aviation and space
i'm an engineer- worked rocket motors, and various satellite programs. this book was recommended by associate after visiting the museum at Langley. The pics are super, with short descriptions, and moderate on the tech. It's an amazing pulse of this wild history, and mostly is from America's lineage. St. Louis, Mercury, Atlas, and up to current Shuttle. There's also the SST, and unique turn of the century early birds. A fine read to be shared with a youngster (my son 10, digs it), or for the history or engineering buff. amazon has it cheaper than at the museum.
