Meet the Lenovo ThinkSystem RAID 940-16i, a high-performance RAID-on-Chip (ROC) server adapter designed to unlock the full potential of internal drive configurations in dense, enterprise-grade environments. Built on PCIe 4.0 with 12Gbps SAS capabilities, this adapter delivers the speed, reliability, and scalability required for data-intensive applications, from databases and virtualization to data analytics and large-scale backups. The 940-16i combines robust RAID protection with a generous 4GB flash cache, enabling faster data access, improved I/O consistency, and lower overall latency across mixed workloads. For IT teams aiming to maximize uptime and streamline management in Lenovo ThinkSystem ecosystems, this card is a compelling choice that aligns with modern data-center demands while staying compatible with a wide range of enterprise drives and backplanes.

  • Powerful PCIe Gen4 ROC architecture delivers exceptional throughput and low-latency I/O, helping servers handle demanding workloads with minimal CPU overhead and smooth scalability as volumes grow.
  • 16 internal SAS/SATA connection channels provide dense drive configurations within a single PCIe card, enabling high-capacity storage layouts and flexible drive topology for modern servers and storage backplanes.
  • 4GB of flash cache accelerates hot data paths, improving read-ahead performance and write-back efficiency to boost throughput for databases, virtual machines, and data-intensive applications while reducing latency.
  • Comprehensive RAID support covers 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60, offering a versatile blend of performance and protection to meet a wide range of enterprise workloads and service-level requirements.
  • RAID-on-Chip (ROC) with enterprise-grade reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features plus centralized management capabilities, enabling streamlined monitoring, health reporting, and firmware updates across Lenovo ThinkSystem deployments.

How to install Lenovo ThinkSystem RAID 940-16i

  • Prepare the server: power down the system, disconnect power, and discharge static electricity before handling components to protect both you and the hardware.
  • Access the PCIe slots: remove the server cover or access panel as required by the chassis documentation to reach available PCIe slots for add-in cards.
  • Install the RAID card: insert the ThinkSystem RAID 940-16i into a suitable PCIe slot (typically a PCIe Gen4 slot) and secure the card with any mounting hardware provided by the chassis or card.
  • Connect drive backplane cables: attach the 12Gb/s SAS cables from the RAID controller to the appropriate internal drive backplane or SAS expander, ensuring proper routing to maintain airflow and reduce cable wear.
  • Power up and configure: boot the server and enter the RAID controller’s setup utility during POST to configure desired RAID levels, volumes, and initialization options. Validate drive visibility and hot-spare settings as needed.
  • Firmware and driver updates: after installation, apply the latest firmware and driver updates through the server management interface or the Lenovo support portal to optimize stability and performance over time.

Lasting value but degraded presentation
Format: Paperback
I've been a BBP fan since the first edition in 2005. The second edition in 2007 was a significant update and refinement. The latest, 2011 edition, is not worth buying if you already have the second edition -- the information is essentially the same but the 2011 is printed on cheap paper and the contrast between text and background for most of the illustrations is lousy, e.g. black text on a dark grey background, white text on a light grey background. I found it very difficult to read. The online version (O'Reilly Safari Books OnLine) is slightly better because it allows you to magnify the low contrast images which makes them slightly more legible. Thankfully, access to the online version is included with the ink-on-paper book free via a scratch-off, lottery ticket-type insert at the back of the book. If I had to do it again, I'd skip the paper book from Amazon and just purchase electronic access via O'Reilly. This version is more legible and you can print important pages that you might want hard copies of to highlight, mark-up, etc.

Powerful for the presenter
Format: Paperback
My boss's boss recently told me that our organization's presentations are boring data dumps that make her wish she was somewhere other than there listening but not really hearing or caring about this slide and dreading the next. She suggested that since I was going to be doing a lot of presentations in the future I should avoid that method and do better presentations. I immediately sought advice from our best presenter and learned that his method came from his gut feelings about what worked better. He has good instincts but to codify what he explained I decided to buy a book to learn why his approach works. The closest book with an effective explanation I could find is "beyond bullet points". It captured and expanded on the instinct my new mentor explained so that I could now understand how to use the slides to supplement the story and how to interweave the data so the whole presentation is more meaningful and memorable. I recommend this book to anyone looking for more of an answer on how to improve their presentations and eliminate the data dump in bullet points.

Great for Presentation Education
Format: Paperback
It has been some time since I have utilized Beyond Bullet Points, but this is one text book that kept with me. The point of the book is to help a presenter get their point across to the audience through Powerpoint presentations, and the book does this well. I am sure there are editions other than this one at this point, and I would definitely recommend looking into them in order to keep up to date. Starting with this book is a great idea due to its simplicity.
