how to install Transition Networks Inc 1000base-t To 1000base-sx/lx, Sm, Sc, 10km- Na

Setting up this media converter is designed to be straightforward and fast, allowing you to extend your network without downtime or complex configuration. Follow these steps to install the unit correctly and safely:

  • Unpack the converter and verify all included components are present, including the unit itself and the power supply if required.
  • Place the converter in a secure, ventilated location such as a network closet or equipment rack. Ensure there is adequate airflow and that the device is not exposed to excessive heat or moisture.
  • Connect the copper Ethernet device to the RJ-45 1000BASE-T port using a standard Ethernet copper cable. Make sure the connection is fully seated and the link lights indicate an active link.
  • Connect the fiber link to the SC port using a fiber optic patch cord that matches the SX or LX mode you intend to use. Verify that the fiber type aligns with your distance requirements (multimode SX or single-mode LX).
  • Power on the unit (if external power is required) and check the LED indicators to confirm a healthy copper-to-fiber link. If available, observe link status on both ends of the connection to ensure two-way communication.
  • Document the installation and test the path with representative traffic to verify throughput and stability. Integrate the converter into your monitoring and maintenance routines as needed.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is this device used for? It is a copper-to-fiber media converter that translates 1000BASE-T Ethernet to 1000BASE-SX/LX fiber, enabling long-distance connections over fiber with an SC interface.
  • Which fiber modes are supported? The device supports both SX (multimode) and LX (single-mode) fiber modes, providing flexibility to work with existing fiber networks.
  • What is the maximum distance? When using LX single-mode fiber, the converter can support distances up to 10 kilometers. Distances for SX depend on the fiber type and installation details.
  • What connector type does the fiber interface use? The fiber interface uses an SC connector for sturdy, widely supported terminations.
  • Is this device managed or unmanaged? The converter is designed for plug-and-play operation and is generally considered unmanaged, meaning it does not require configuration to establish a basic copper-to-fiber link.

Solved Specific Need
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: White
Nice product which solved a problem of needing USB power clamped to a very thick work table. Most power strips with a clamp do not accommodate thick tables between 1.75" and 2" so I was happy to find this one. Successfully provides power to all my USB devices even a laptop (although charging is a bit slower compared to the OEM power adapter).

One minor bug
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
I received this today and mounted it to the table I have next to my recliner. I plugged it into a remote control outlet so I can turn everything off at once. I used two of the AC outlets for the power recliner. I then plugged a USB powered fan into one of the USB-A ports. I plugged the power cable from a set of speakers positioned next to the headrest of the recliner into the other USB-A port. I used one of the USB C outlets to charge my tablet. When I hit the switch on the remote control to turn off power to the strip before going to bed I discovered a bug. The only way I can describe it is a cross port power bleed. After killing power to the strip my speakers were still playing, not well as they had static. I discovered by trial and error that if I unplugged my tablet the problem stopped. Apparently if you have something with a battery plugged into one of the USB ports and have something plugged into the other USB ports it pulls power from the device with the battery to try and power the other devices plugged in. Other than this one problem it seems to be just what I was looking for.

Mounts to desktop
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
Helps keep the desktop clutter down. Sometimes I need to charge flashlights, earphones, hearing aids, portable battery chargers and the like. I don’t want to plug these onto my computer so this unit fits that need. Sturdy desk mount so one hand plugging in and unplugging usually works fine.

Decent, gets warm though
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
Compact with a nice long power cord. However, it does get warm, which makes me nervous, seeing as it is clamped to a wooden table...
