《棄貓：關於父親，我想說的事》當然不只是關於貓，主要是村上寫下了他與他的父親之間的點點滴滴，關於父子，也關乎於村上文學的根源。正如村上所說：「歷史並不是過去的事情。那會在意識的內側，或無意識的內側，化為有溫度有生命的血液，不容分說地流向下一個世代。」
個人與體制，戰爭與和平，父與子，罪與罰，可謂村上春樹生命中不能承受之難題，也是他作品中「卡夫卡式」或「杜斯妥也夫斯基式」的無窮迴圈。
這部作品儘管篇幅不長，卻能看出村上小說中長期關注的主題之脈絡。看似可愛小巧的一本書，卻無限輻射延伸出村上的創作歷程與世界觀，從療癒的貓咪、父親的形象，或者對戰爭與人類殘酷黑暗之心的思索，引人想要從頭探索村上歷年來重要的多部作品。
《棄貓：關於父親，我想說的事》由村上指定，請台灣插畫家高妍為全書繪製插畫。村上表示：「插畫家高妍的畫風令我感動,於是決定全部交給她處理。她的畫作有一種令我懷念的不可思議的感覺。」
