The true, behind-the-scenes history of the people who built Silicon Valley and shaped Big Tech in America
Long before Margaret O'Mara became one of our most consequential historians of the American-led digital revolution, she worked in the White House of Bill Clinton and Al Gore in the earliest days of the commercial Internet. There she saw firsthand how deeply intertwined Silicon Valley was with the federal government—and always had been—and how shallow the common understanding of the secrets of the Valley's success actually was. Now, after almost five years of pioneering research, O'Mara has produced the definitive history of Silicon Valley for our time, the story of mavericks and visionaries, but also of powerful institutions creating the framework for innovation, from the Pentagon to Stanford University. It is also a story of a community that started off remarkably homogeneous and tight-knit and stayed that way, and whose belief in its own mythology has deepened into a collective hubris that has led to astonishing triumphs as well as devastating second-order effects.
Deploying a wonderfully rich and diverse cast of protagonists, from the justly famous to the unjustly obscure, across four generations of explosive growth in the Valley, from the forties to the present, O'Mara has wrestled one of the most fateful developments in modern American history into magnificent narrative form. She is on the ground with all of the key tech companies, chronicling the evolution in their offerings through each successive era, and she has a profound fingertip feel for the politics of the sector and its relation to the larger cultural narrative about tech as it has evolved over the years. Perhaps most impressive, O'Mara has penetrated the inner kingdom of tech venture capital firms, the insular and still remarkably old-boy world that became the cockpit of American capitalism and the crucible for bringing technological innovation to market, or not.
The transformation of big tech into the engine room of the American economy and the nexus of so many of our hopes and dreams—and, increasingly, our nightmares—can be understood, in Margaret O'Mara's masterful hands, as the story of one California valley. As her majestic history makes clear, its fate is the fate of us all.

Monthly reload for Subscribe & Save Orders
Reload type: One Time Reload
Not a glamorous review, but a genuinely useful tip for Subscribe & Save users. I reload about $100 to my gift card balance once a month, a week or two before my S&S order processes. Amazon pulls each Subscribe & Save item as a separate transaction, which means 10+ individual charges hitting your bank account on before or on ship day. A headache for budgeting and a minor anxiety trigger if you're watching your account for unauthorized activity. Loading the balance first consolidates everything into one clean transaction. Your S&S order then pulls from the gift card balance rather than your card directly, and your bank statement stays tidy.
The side benefit is built-in budget discipline. I set about $100 as my monthly Amazon ceiling - if my cart runs over, something gets pushed to next month. It's a simple system that keeps spending intentional without any extra effort. If you're a regular S&S user who wants cleaner finances and less ""wait, who charged this and what was that charge?"" moments, this is worth making a habit.

Great for Budgeting – Instant Balance and Easy to Use
Reload type: One Time Reload
I use Amazon’s gift card reload feature to plan my spending. It’s perfect when I know I want to make a purchase but prefer to set the funds aside first.
I love that it’s immediate—no worries about pending charges or accidental spending from my card. It gives me peace of mind knowing that when I’m ready to buy, the balance is just sitting there, waiting.
Pros: easy to use, instant balance update, helps with budgeting and avoiding overspending
Cons: funds are locked into Amazon once reloaded, doesn’t count toward certain account requirements like review eligibility
Overall, it’s a convenient and reliable way to manage spending on Amazon, especially if you like having control over your purchases.

I did this with a pay in 4. It made it super simple for a higher balance.
Reload type: One Time Reload
I’ve used this to reload my balance a few times, and it’s been simple and reliable. The process is quick, and the funds show up without any delays or issues.
It’s a convenient option when you want to control spending or keep purchases separate without using a card each time. Everything is straightforward and easy to manage.
I haven’t run into any problems with transactions or balance updates. It’s been consistent every time I’ve used it.
Overall, it’s an easy and dependable way to keep funds ready to go without any hassle.

Easy to use. Perfect for items you might end up returning.
Reload type: One Time Reload
First thing to note is that this is easy to use. Select whatever amount you want, how often you want it (one time, a specific date, etc), and then click buy and confirm the payment method. I normally only have to wait a few minutes for the process to go through and get the funds added to my balance.
I like using this option for the very rare times I order something that I'm not sure I'll end up keeping, such as buying shoes or other clothing. Items that say they're the same size might not fit correctly for some reason and I'll have to return it. I find the return process is faster and easier than using a card where I'll have to wait until the money is put back on the card.
